Description:

The artist offered an itinerary in the gallery and outside.

The MAI's eight windows were blocked up to present text fragments in fluorescent lettering.

Posters announcing lost cats were distributed on walls and lampposts throughout the surrounding streets. The poster was touched up by the artist, though he took care of preserving all the information.

On the other side of the large windows, the MAI's exhibition hall was plunged in darkness. Four stations were indicated on the ground. A soundtrack and projection were associated with each one.

Galerie du MAI gave carte blanche to Michael Fernandes, a Canadian artist known for his artwork and his ecclectic body of work. During an artist residency in Montreal, he shot short video, almost too simple little stories. One potato, two potato... is a game, a random game, but it is also a change of roles, a turn of events. This artwork traces a quest for identity in tongue-in-cheek style.

Description:

The installation consists of a gigantic glass prism with a rectangular base, which is split in the middle to disclose a silky texture that longs to be touched. The rectangle is covered with letters through which we distinguish the excerpt of a text.

The artist divided the words into series: hunger, feet, capital, power, order and control, America, art, morals, lost floating, measurement.

The project uses city space as a space for collective thought about the words we use. The lines of the Quartier des Faubourgs's sidewalks become reading surfaces that flow to the rhythm of passers-by. The act of walking becomes a play on words, a constellation of ideas and of whimsical, critical, perhaps even cynical word associations.

Description:

24 plates have been moulded into the gullies that are created by ground erosion (through the movements of pedestrians). The sentences on the plates are taken from conversations with the pedestrians.

Caroline Gagné is interested in urban landscape truisms and types, particularly the idea of erosion, whether it is linked to the environment, to everyday objects or to the connection we have to them.

She works on site-specific projects, either located in public places (a park, a familiar building) or refering to these places in the context of indoor exhibitions or Web projects. An observer of all those anonymous and banal gestures that ponctuate city life, Caroline explores the notions of fragility and absence through a delicate use of everyday materials and objects that may seem mundane but that were in fact chosen for their significant connection to the world.

Description:

La Réserve is an installation inspired by the specific history of a park that the city of Montreal left without any designation. At the park's entrance, a structure evokes the two squares - one red, the other, grey - usually used by the city of Montreal to announce the park's equipment.

A mobile and transparent suitcase completes the installation. A neon sign shines within the suitcase, stating that a journey has come to an end: "Nous y voilà" ("Here we are").

La Réserve is an installation by Clément de Gaulejac who was inspired by the specific history of a park that had been left without designation or assignment by the city of Montreal. Not knowing what to do with the space, the city decided... not to make any decision about it. And so, the park was left as it was, a white space on the map of the city. A fence prohibiting access to the park insured that the default decision would not be countermanded by use of the space. DARE-DARE moved into the park in 2006, opening the fence, and printed business cards with the intriguing mention "located in a park with no name". Clément de Gaulejac decided to leave his own mark on the story of this park by imagining an installation by which this unnamed park became The Park With No Name.

Description:

The project acts as a mediated dialogue between three artists from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and three artists from Berlin, Germany. Prior to 1916, the city of Kitchener was known as Berlin. In both Kitchener and Berlin, local artists act as 'guides', choosing a site of particular significance to them and recounting a story in their mother tongue. The artists also act as 'interpreters' by responding to the videos in the other language with a simultaneous written translation based either on their knowledge of the other language or by creative guessing. The written 'translations' appear as subtitles.

Stephanie Caribou, Bobby Coutu, Gabriel Kematch, Samantha Hiebert, Destiny Dawn Sutherland, five Aboriginal/Metis youth-at-risk, were chosen for the opportunity to learn from an Elder the customary use of ceremonial flags. They were taught for five weeks by artistic professionals to learn skills in community development as well as artistic and practical skills in digital media. They worked with Aboriginal artists Scott Stephens (photographer ), Sébastien Aubin (designer) and KC Adams (visual artist). The five artists set out to engage in the local Aboriginal community by photographing participants at The Manito Ahbee International Competition Pow Wow competition in November of 2008.After digitally altering their photographs to create a total of 90 flags, the images were compiled to create 3 public artworks, three billboards fitting 30 flags each.

Description:

The sun never sets refers both to Regina's status as "The Queen City", named after Queen Victoria Regina, and the brilliant prairie sunshine that bathes its streets and parks. The name of Victoria Park connects it to colonial England, and places it in several contexts; a local context as the main downtown square and a global context as a member of a worldwide "club" of Victoria Parks. Similarly, the architecture that surrounds the park is influenced by international styles and trends of the last 100 years, with often regional characteristics that allow the buildings to co-exist and form the spatial edge of the park. New works by Rachelle Viader Knowles and Don Gill explored Victoria Park today: as a concept and a place, juxtaposed with a history of Victoria Park and the buildings which rose around it. Rachelle Viader Knowles' work included a video installation/link-up with her niece in Victoria Park, Cardiff, Wales, and an intervention in Regina's Park. The words "Think of England" were inscribed on the ground cover. Don Gill created a photo-based "archive" of the neighbourhoods he traverses, in and around Victoria Park, including the buildings examined in the exhibition.

"Specifically for this exhibition, I have made two new works that connect Victoria Park in Regina with the Victoria Park in my home town of Cardiff in Wales…another colonized country/people. As an artist, much of the work I do explores communication and relationships between people and places. Within the context of the Regina Public Library, I wanted to make works that use words. The text 'Think of England', inserted into Victoria Park which sits in front of the Dunlop Art Gallery, is both political in its historical instruction to respect and consider a ‘motherland’ and a critique as a question posed to the reader – what do YOU think of England? It is also a personal question posed to and by myself as someone born there, unsure of how to address nationhood, national affiliation, a sense of longing and belonging to place, as someone who grew up English as a ‘foreigner’ in Wales and lives as a ‘foreigner’ here, both places where local languages were systematically suppressed through acts of attempted eradication by the English."

Recent post by drummer Lexie Miller from a public bulletin site in Saskatoon. The text is taken directly from an original ad found in a public bulletin binder at Long & McQuade (musical equipment sales and rentals) in Saskatoon. The original ad was photographed on June 2, 2009. The text is the same, except for the phone number that was changed for an email address.
