Description:

The light box images at Carleton U. are designed to recall the government mega-projects of the 1970s. Symmetrical and non-monumental, the logos echo the egalitarian sensibility inherent to the modern-style architecture of the university. While we may not view the mega-project with any sense of nostalgia today, the social engineering behind these grand plans represents the waning edge of a futurist vision.

Description:

Twelve steel plates were suspended to trees. These plates were painted black with white markings. The inscriptions appeared sometimes as icons (star, crescent moon), sometimes as two dates on a tombstone and sometimes as words.

Artefact 2004 – sculptures urbaines is a group of thirteen artists, which includes Monique Bertrand, Martin Boisseau, Ani Deschênes, Doyon-Rivest, André Du Bois, Lucie Duval, Raymond Gervais, Michel Goulet, Neva-Gotthilf, Daniel Olson, Yannick Pouliot, Alan Storey and Louise Viger. Their artworks were installed along Chemin Olmsted, between the Centre de la montagne — near the site of the 1964 symposium — and the big chalet at the lookout. Some works were imposing, others were more discreet but all were presented as imaginary places likely to appeal to visitors.

Description:

For this artwork, the artist used three different media: a medium poster format throughout Québec City, a large format poster placed at the front entrance outside the Musée de la civilisation, and the Web. The work was exhibited simultaneously in the city of Belgrade. The posters displayed the portrait of a woman (in Québec City) and of a man (in Belgrade). A text was superimposed onto their faces: Three sentences to the left and a long text to the right.

Description:

Cement slabs were arranged around a central excavation surrounded by a rope and flanking the mound of earth removed to this end. Two gravel arches framed this "garden". Fragmented words were written on the slabs. The artist marked the site of former Guest Motors garage with concrete words and scattered a few objects/clues.

Eleven artists were invited to take over six city sites to create in situ works. Axe NEO-7 looked for places that had been forgotten or neglected in the town of Hull. A tour bus allowed visitors to enjoy the works in the company of artists and curators. Artists invited by Gallery 101 occupied Victoria Island and Richmond landing in Ottawa.

Description:

Large panels feature various texts. The art work consists of three installations and evokes an encounter. The first installation that appeals to the traveller consists of three rectangular pieces of cotton that hang respectfully from surrounding trees. The second installation consists of a flat, heart-shaped stone covered with moss and dry leaves, and surrounded by hundreds of smaller gray stones. In the final installation, a short text invites the traveller inside the structure to lay down a stone softly and choose a gift.

Inipi est la "sweat lodge" ou loge à transpirer, le rite le plus ancien des Natifs d'Amérique, commun à toutes les tribus. En langue lakota, inipi signifie "naître encore" : dans l'inipi, enveloppé par la vapeur purificatrice du rite, l'individu renaît à une conscience nouvelle, à une lucidité nouvelle quant à son rôle et à son destin. History

History:

Galerie FMR organized a manifestation of public art on the site of the future Place Valois. Seven artists took on the ghostly character of the current site and invested the expropriated properties at the corner of Ontario and Valois Streets. They proposed a reflection on urbanity as seen as the gauge for the "user-friendliness" of a public space, a space which the public needs to take possession of. The demolition of buildings marked the end of this event, but also the end of an era.

Tu regardes tu es regardé par le ciel, offert à la gravité de ce silence bleu. Tu retiens l’ombre et la lumière sous tes ailes puis les redonne à la terre. Très loin dans le vide tu vas unir ton passage à l’éternité. Le corps remplit l’espace et recouvre en même temps le corps de la terre. Par-dessus l’épaule de la vie tu vois la chute, la douleur qui demeurera. Les yeux ne sont jamais revenus du corridor où il n’y avait rien que l’origine retrouvée par la hauteur.

Quelques traits sur le mur de la grotte les couleurs de la bête la forme visible de la vie en ce mouvement le monde a commencé. Par le silence et la nuit la gravité du noir, la terre dans les mains qui tâtonnent ; par les galets, l’eau, les fruits l’oiseau secouant l’espace et le bruits des pas incertains nous avons commencé. Lumières éteintes, portes refermées au bout de l’horizon, le monde ne tenait qu’à un fil.

Description:

The work consists of white painted wooden boards, linked end to end by two yellow polypropylene ropes and kept at the bottom of the river with boat anchors. The sculpture initially looked like a giant arrow and remained in position for 12 days. The two series of boards were then launched into the River, still attached to each other, where they took on other configurations depending on the flow of the currents. Using aerial photography, the artist kept three of these "drawings". Some of these photographs were distributed to people from the region, who were then invited to complete the "drawings" and supply a text about cultural issues of the region. The document was then given to the Archives of the Musée de Baie-Saint-Paul. During the symposium, the artist also launched 4 small sail boats into the River.
