Description:

The artist wanted to transform a dark corner with light and a story. The text portion of her installation invites the viewer into a conversation between the artist and the maker of the lettering. In doing so, the viewer can gain some insight into the process of making this work.

The work is also based on the numbers 0 and 1. These numbers represent the basis of the mathematical Binary System used to control the Binary circuitry inside modern computers.

When Calgary artist Vera Gartley learned of the competition to liven up the Plus 15 system with art, she chose to transform this dark corner with light, reflections and a story. The competition was sponsored by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Calgary Allied Arts Foundation.

Description:

The artwork is shaped as a frieze panel and installed along three of the lobby's walls. The black frieze panel is pierced with words in French, English, Hebrew and Yiddish. The cut-out first layer opens onto a second layer made of broken glass that is lit from behind, evoking Kristallnacht, the "Night of Broken Glass" when Jewish storefront windows were shattered in November 1938.

Description:

The artwork consists of 24 mini houses attached to the walls of a room. They are all painted red and in different sizes. The houses are inspired from houses neighboring the school and offer a silhouette with a pointy roof. Each one features a glass window with the upper half divided into four window panes. Through these, we can see photographs onto which images have been drawn. A text is painted above each window, around its contour.
