Description:

A planisphere is cast on the ground at the entrance of the school. This map of Earth is coupled with excerpts from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. A block of letters is embedded in the wall. At first, it looks like an abstract mosaic but then words reveal themselves in the manner of a crisscross word puzzle.

The Earth map was inspired by a map drawn by Buckminster Fuller in 1927. It presents an uninterrupted view of Earth.

The mural is made of stones from different regions of the globe. The ensemble as a whole evokes a crisscross word puzzle. It contains fifteen decipherable words, written in every direction. The words are trades that children still practice today somewhere in the world.

"A library is an ordered resource for accessing information to further one's knowledge and to enhance one's learning. The route taken to that information can guide the thought process and determine the end conclusions. Leonardo realized this a few centuries ago; Our concept is to challenge users of the facility to rethink their thought processes. The most opportune time to accomplish this is before entering the Library - confronting the viewer by having them walk through the piece - and perhaps encouraging them to leave their previous perceptions at the door. The format in presenting the concept is another Leonardo da Vinci exercise - a geometric discovery of form, mathematics and order. Our interpretation of the exercise challenges the viewer's perceptions: first, by engaging the individual in a visual puzzle that defines the various elements of the geometry in a manner that also juggles their perceptions; and secondly, by making visual references to the cosmos that will take the viewer beyond the physical piece to consider the mysteries of the mind, universe, and of course, the search for truth. In locating the piece at, and as the entrance, it emphasizes Public Art as a functioning component of life and architecture - the concept challenging one's thought process and the physical statement aiding in the flow and function of the ordered architecture."

Description:

The painting represents various commercial activities in Canada, from coast to coast: the fisheries of the Pacific, fruit crops, forestry, Native American art, hunting and the fur trade, the oil industry, livestock, agriculture, aviation, chemistry, mining, hydroelectricity, engineering and architecture, textiles and crafts, the maple syrup industry, vegetable crops, and the fisheries of the Atlantic. A maple leaf, the emblem of Canada, appears in the middle. It is overlayed with a scroll featuring the motto of Canada, and the winged helmet of Hermes, the Greek god of commerce and a symbol of invisibility, invulnerability and power.

Description:

Convex, mirrored acrylic domes lay on a concrete wall spanning four stories and spelling out a "Snellen eye chart"—that familiar series of letters that many of us recognize from routine eye exams—as enormous braille letters. It is an "eye chart for the blind". A plaque next to the sculpture explains in braille the concept behind the work.

Double Blind is a large-scale sculptural installation commissioned for the atrium of the new Vancouver Community College’s Broadway Campus building. Double Blind is accompanied by a T-shirt that is available at the VCC Broadway Campus Bookstore. The T-shirt echoes the installation’s oxymoronic premise: those who can see the work likely don’t read braille, and those who read braille probably cannot see the work. Double Blind was created as part of the City of Vancouver’s Public Art Program.

This mural recognizes and perpetuates the Act of Rememberance for all of our Veterans. It is a transitional collage of images that recognizes the different theatres of war. The choice of sepia colour tones was to give the feel of time. The three central images represent each branch of the Armed Forces and these three individuals are former residents of Morden.

Lexie Miller’s ad was re-designed to fit AKA’s public billboard, where it was hand-painted by local sign-painter Dave Smith. Recent post by drummer Lexie Miller from a public bulletin site in Saskatoon. The text is taken directly from an original ad found in a public bulletin binder at Long & McQuade (musical equipment sales and rentals) in Saskatoon. The original ad was photographed on June 2, 2009. The text is the same, except for the phone number that was changed for an email address.

From Frozen Ponds is a collage-like mural filling an entire wall [alongside a staircase].

The mural’s cool greys, blues and purples suggest the colours created by natural light refracting through cold ice. The "historical images" chosen by Williams for the project evoke professional competition, and, in the artist’s words, the “spirit, history and exhilaration of the game.” Images culled from the B.C. Archives and the City of Vancouver Archives.

Images of women playing hockey emphasize the long, rich tradition of a sport often overshadowed by the male-dominated NHL; in fact, the game is now the fastest growing female sport in the country.

Description:

The tapestry is conceived in two sections. The smaller panel functions as an introduction, somewhat like a decorative title page. The outer border pattern is ornate and lyrical, surrounding an interior field. A chant-like sequence of words is woven across the pattern of the interior field, representing a more physical, less romantic aspect of the senses. The large panel is dominated by five images that allude to the five senses.

My hope is that the images will resonate differently for each viewer and that they will suggest the interconnection between the senses and how we experience them. I have contrasted the richness of the five symbols and surrounding area with a stark black, white and grey frieze of visceral images of the human body and its interior workings. These images are ordered and coded like specimens for study, referencing the impulse to analyze, understand and control all aspects of the human experience and sensuality.

If I had the chance right now to erase all of it,

to start over again hitchhiking home

from a fishing trip with Don in the back

of that pick-up truck and not have the

accident happen. If I could just pick up

my life at that point as opposed to living

the life I’ve lived since. I wouldn’t take it.

For the next months I lay in a

Stryker frame bolted tightly between

two hard narrow bed pads which rotated

in the middle of a large, metal framework

I was unable to move. For the first time

in my life I was alone and absolutely

helpless...One night I lay sweating...

my head pounding...my back on fire with

pain. I wanted everything to be over. At

that moment my life seemed worthless.

my legs

At the age of 15 I was athlete of the year

at my High School. It was June 27 1973.

My friend and I were hitchhiking back

from fishing when we caught a ride with

a guy in a pick-up.

a man came alongside me in a red

convertible. “I hear you were a good

athlete. Why not get back in a little

competition?” He had his own wheelchair

in the back seat....Stan Stronge, a

pioneer in wheelchair sports, recipient of

the Order of Canada, a friend who changed

my life by being there for me, he helped

me realize the value of helping others.

Then in 1980 Terry Fox came striding along

on a prosthetic leg with his Marathon of

Hope. I watched how people responded

to him and later after his death, how they

continued to honor his spirit. They

acknowledged how much good can come

from one young man and a dream. In a world

in which people with disabilities felt

invisible Terry Fox made people see the

invisible. I decided Terry’s theme to

raise awareness would be the focus of

my wheelchair journey around the world.

When I come back and it’s all over

I want to be able to wake up ...see

a picture of me in the wheelchair,

sitting on the Great Wall of China.

Amanda is the reason I am

on the road, she has taken

the challenge.

People don’t understand what the tour

is about yet, even most of us who were

on it. Rick was off in right field with his

reality which was the pursuit and the

field with our own reality, the day to day grind

working in the outside world to make it as

easy as possible for him to do that and

somehow we all had to get together in the

centre.

wealthy countries in the world and put only $6,000 in the

Legacy Fund. BUT WE’D MADE IT THIS FAR!

We started the tour before we were ready, things weren’t

happening and we were paying for it. I was sniping at everyone

I also knew that I had to uncover the source of my feelings.

If I didn’t my anger was going to drive everyone

away. I came to recognize that the driving force behind my

reactions was fear, frustration and the overwhelming

sense of responsibility.

second day, completely overwhelmed

tendonitis in my wrists, elbows and shoulders

and sirens blasting, sensory overload...

until one is committed there is uncertainty

for the crew, long, tiring days

I view this tour like trying to push a boulder

up a steep hill. Lately a lot of people have

tried to take me from behind that boulder

and set me on top of it, make something

special out of me. please put me

back behind the boulder, and let me try to

push it a little bit further.

The wind is relentless, fine

eye burning dust

Listen, I've had parents come and

snatch their children away from in front of me

because my voice is strange and

my arms wave around a lot. I’ve had

other children laugh at me. That’s not an

easy thing to accept. Rick has changed that

in Newfoundland. I saw parents running

down the highway with their children, trying

to get a handshake or autograph.

And the kids? They love him. You think

that isn’t going to make a difference.

Description:

The artist installed a series of text- and photo-based ceramic tiles in the main hall of Southland Leisure Centre. The intent of the public art piece is to capture the spirit of the Centre by reflecting the activities that take place there, and its postion as a wellness and gathering place for the communities it serves.

The layering of imagery and glazes, with the incorporation of a multitude of small details and textures, creates a sense of movement and rhythm, reflecting the spirit of the facility's users. The images are representative of wellness, accessibility, participation and recreation, and celebrate the cultural diversity of the surrounding communities.

The red strip of fused glass that runs through the piece as a metaphorical river, together with the 30+ translations of the word 'welcome' and the symbolic use of hands, reflect the universal concepts of interconnectivity, respect and acceptance.

Commissioned by the City of Calgary’s Public Art Program. The artist was selected through an open call process with a submission deadline of November 9, 2007. The artistic budget was $65,000. The project was a collaborative initiative from the Public Art Program and the Department of Recreation. The capital project which provided the funding was Renovation and Facility Enhancement. Body Mind Spirit was completed in April 2009.

The artwork is divided into four distinct parts: two pictorial sections, a sculpted section and an engraved and oxidized steel section.
