Description:

The work consists of a modular painting on glass. The central element of the composition is the bed. Three orange beds are shown against a blue sky: the first is near a crescent moon, while the other two are less sharp and separated by a sun. Lexie Miller’s ad was re-designed to fit AKA’s public billboard, where it was hand-painted by local sign-painter Dave Smith. Recent post by drummer Lexie Miller from a public bulletin site in Saskatoon. The text is taken directly from an original ad found in a public bulletin binder at Long & McQuade (musical equipment sales and rentals) in Saskatoon. The original ad was photographed on June 2, 2009. The text is the same, except for the phone number that was changed for an email address.

Description:

Brilliantly-colored figural pieces are interspersed with abstract components depicting the activities that take place in the recreation facility. Calligraphic marks and stripes are integrated into the panels, lending a spontaneous gestural quality to the work. The piece as a whole is meant to reflect the note of celebration felt throughout the building, as well as the excitement, anticipation and intense focus found there.

The artist was chosen through an open call process, which invited all interested artists to submit an application for the project.
The budget for Celebrations was $26,000.
The project was a collaborative initiative by the Public Art Program and City of Calgary Recreation, the business unit sponsor.
The capital project through which the funding was made available was the construction of the Cardel Place recreation facility.
Celebrations was completed in September 2004.

Power at Home

Artwork theme:

The line between propaganda and advertising is a thin one. Star Power presents the viewer with a series of ads that mix communist iconography and images of hydro electricity. Bold and visually stopping, the images further confuse the question of who is in control of electrical power in Ontario: Is it some far left consortium, or is a company simply borrowing the radical chic of Soviet design as part of an ad campaign? Plastered onto construction boarding in downtown Kitchener, the origin and intent of the images remained elusive.

Finger-painted text in a stairwell. On the public side of the stairwell, there is a finger-painted text used in exorcisms and three periscopes placed in the toilets contain a censored religious image. On the private side of the stairwell, there is a miniature altar, which features a tabernacle containing moose hair, and 12 cases presented in the manner of a reliquary.

Mural painted on a concrete wall and a triptych consisting of a painting with bas-reliefs. The mural consists of horizontal rectangles, blue wavy forms and stylized fishes that swim along the wall. The two bas-reliefs are larger than the painting and represent children next to a river, which overflows on both sides of the central painting.

The work consists of three panels. The central panel represents an arched bridge with three turtles crossing it. Under it, the tail of a fish or sea mammal can be seen. This tail rises out of an oval aluminium plate that evokes water. Part of the animal's fin is also made of aluminium. The two extremities of the arched bridge are presented on two smaller panels, which hang one facing the other on the side walls that frame the central panel. The text is written on the wall plate.

Description:

The work consists of four paintings. In the lobby, three paintings display wheelbarrows made of aluminium or that have been painted in bright colours (red, yellow, orange, blue). Boats are pouring out of the wheelbarrows. The painting in the dining room features twelve aligned "wheelbarrow-boats," in the middle of which appears a larger wheelbarrow, shown in profile. The upper part of this larger wheelbarrow spills out of the canvas. Text is written on a wall plate.

C'est de la terre et de la mer que l'homme récolte l'ensemble de sa nourriture. Depuis la nuit des temps, la brouette et la barque sont donc pour lui des instruments élémentaires d'approvisionnement. Elles sont à la fois véhicules et contenants. Et grâce à leur mobilité et capacité de charge, elles prolongent en quelque sorte les possibilités de l'homme. La barque et la brouette sont représentées ici à des échelles variées comme autant de contenants de mesure qui se transvident l'un dans l'autre, mélange, dosage, pressage, combinaison. L'homme par son habileté à les utiliser atteindra l'équilibre, cette notion indissociable des arts de la table.
