History

History:

The Transpositions exhibition was created over a 3-year period. Works are divided into 3 categories: portraiture; landscape and flora (nature); and advertising. Created for the advertising platforms posters in the SkyTrain stations. The work of 20 Canadian artists extends 24 km along the SkyTrain route from Vancouver to Surrey. Four to seven works are installed randomly amongst the advertising at the following seven stations: Waterfront, Burrard, Grandville, Broadway, Metrotown, New Westminster and Scott Road.

The work consists of an installation and video in three parts:

Wish You Were Here, as part of the "At The Corner of Time and Place" theme, Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2007, Toronto

New version of the work (gobo projector, balloons filled with helium)

For the play / pause / repeat exhibition, Woodcock created a series of three new works: Location Shoot (2003), A favorite film for each letter of the alphabet / A favorite film from each year since my birth (2003) and Wish You Were Here³ (2003).

Note(s):

One day, in October 2003 in Toronto, at the request of Laurel Woodcock, the Adler Aviation Company flew a plane pulling a banner on which the sentence "WISH YOU WERE HERE" was written.

On January 15, 2004, in Guelph, the event was repeated for thirty minutes at the opening of the artist's exhibition at the Macdonald Stewart Art Center.

The three videos presented were Location shoot, A favorite film from each letter of the alphabet / a favorite film from each year since my birth and a document about the flight with the banner (3:30 min).

"The phrase is familiar as that abused by generations of souvenir postcards. Once meant as a wholehearted invocation to the friend or family member who could not travel along to an exotic location, it has become hollow and empty, often used with sardonic intent."

Description:

Every day, the artist embroidered on a piece of cloth a significant sentence from one of the 32 chapters of the French and English versions of the novel Bonheur d'occasion by Gabrielle Roy. After, the colored strips of cloth were hung to the wall. An audiotape of the novel being read was played in a loop.

Action art based on a mail art activity. Five models of postcards were distributed in Montreal, Val-David and other places. A black & white photograph representing the artist's two children, seen from behind, is displayed on the front of the postcard. What in my mother's life fed her need for silence and denial?
What shame did my father experience as a child?
Only recently, have I really understood that I was not at fault.

The photographs used in this performance led to the creation of a temporary installation, (one) veillings, at the Old Market Square, in 1995, during the Photography Festival organized by The Floating Gallery in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Back pain is the project that the artist produced during her residency at the Atelier de l'isle in Val-David. The symposium was held at Concordia University.

Description:

Looking back at history as official interpretation of facts, and in this context, the power of institutions, the artist created three hundred artistic books that she presented at the reading room of the Bibliothèque nationale. All contain the same information, but each numbered and signed copy is unique as the order in which the text is presented varies from one book to another. Neumark explores the subject of "the commemoration of knowledge through books." The books are printed in Duotone with colour images. Each book includes an introduction page, 13 photographic images, 11 pages of text and 2 fly leaves. The press run is of 150 numbered copies, signed and presented in a cardboard folder.

Description:

The artist inserted 10,000 bookmarks in various books where the text captured her attention. They were distributed randomly, in public and private libraries, bookstores, etc.. The intervention was initiated in 1997 and continued until the artist had dispersed the 10,000 copies of the bookmark. If they were not removed by a user, the bookmarks could continue to be inserted between the pages of other books for several years to come. A photograph of hands peeling beets appeared on the front of the bookmark and, on the back, a photograph of a building engulfed in flames. The building is one that the artist lived in before it was destroyed by arson. The image of the beet is a visual quote from a 1996 performance by the artist, entitled S (us) taining.
