Description:

La Réserve is an installation inspired by the specific history of a park that the city of Montreal left without any designation. At the park's entrance, a structure evokes the two squares - one red, the other, grey - usually used by the city of Montreal to announce the park's equipment.

A mobile and transparent suitcase completes the installation. A neon sign shines within the suitcase, stating that a journey has come to an end: "Nous y voilà" ("Here we are").

La Réserve is an installation by Clément de Gaulejac who was inspired by the specific history of a park that had been left without designation or assignment by the city of Montreal. Not knowing what to do with the space, the city decided... not to make any decision about it. And so, the park was left as it was, a white space on the map of the city. A fence prohibiting access to the park insured that the default decision would not be countermanded by use of the space. DARE-DARE moved into the park in 2006, opening the fence, and printed business cards with the intriguing mention "located in a park with no name". Clément de Gaulejac decided to leave his own mark on the story of this park by imagining an installation by which this unnamed park became The Park With No Name.

History:

The Transpositions exhibition was created over a 3-year period. Works are divided into 3 categories: portraiture; landscape and flora (nature); and advertising. Created for the advertising platforms posters in the SkyTrain stations. The work of 20 Canadian artists extends 24 km along the SkyTrain route from Vancouver to Surrey. Four to seven works are installed randomly amongst the advertising at the following seven stations: Waterfront, Burrard, Grandville, Broadway, Metrotown, New Westminster and Scott Road.

For the play / pause / repeat exhibition, Woodcock created a series of three new works: Location Shoot (2003), A favorite film for each letter of the alphabet / A favorite film from each year since my birth (2003) and Wish You Were Here³ (2003).

Note(s):

One day, in October 2003 in Toronto, at the request of Laurel Woodcock, the Adler Aviation Company flew a plane pulling a banner on which the sentence "WISH YOU WERE HERE" was written.

On January 15, 2004, in Guelph, the event was repeated for thirty minutes at the opening of the artist's exhibition at the Macdonald Stewart Art Center.

The three videos presented were Location shoot, A favorite film from each letter of the alphabet / a favorite film from each year since my birth and a document about the flight with the banner (3:30 min).

"The phrase is familiar as that abused by generations of souvenir postcards. Once meant as a wholehearted invocation to the friend or family member who could not travel along to an exotic location, it has become hollow and empty, often used with sardonic intent."

Description:

The installation takes the form of three maple trees, with their burlap-wrapped root bags intact, situated at the end of a sculpted earth furrow which seems to have been dug out by the Northbound scraping movement of the trees. Contained in the furrow is a residual trail of cast bronze text; this text, in hand-written script, consists of the story of the advancing trees in Macbeth.

where the bones of amphibious corpses

on their own destruction

shape-changers licking their entrails
& recalling the long climb out
of boxes with popped locks
as the ebb tide sucks sand from under rocks

which has nothing to do with its place in the order
it glides through the classifications

The work was exhibited as part of the public art program "Art on Public Lands Project" in Soper Creek Park, organized by the Visual Arts Center of Clarington.
The audio component of Scenic View was recorded on an HHB MDP500 mini-disk recorder, edited on a SAFDiE workstation with noise reduction through a CEDAR DNS1000 unit.
The male narrative voice on the soundtrack is poet Victor Coleman.
O'Callaghan's text juxtaposes familiar English words for endangered or extinct trees with their Latin names. Example: "Norway Maple - Acer platanoides".
William Norman, his technician, worked to create the soundtrack accompanying the installation. Scenic View biography in 2001 to 2002: Anne O'Callaghan (Rodgers 2002).
The work is being reconfigured. (Exchange with the artist).
Because it was conceived in-situ, this work has no history beyond its exhibition at the VAC.

Passage featured an excerpt from the essay Ecstasy and Inertia by philosopher Jean Baudrillard. Beginning with a negation (no), the text created a metaphoric circuit by ending with a preposition suggesting contact and location (on). Functioning as a memorial to the post-industrial space where the phrase was contained – a gutted commercial site transformed into a temporary art gallery – the inscription also alluded to the terminal nature of commerce. The installation proposed a kind of formalist vandalism, akin to carving ones name into a public bench. Set behind a glass façade, Passage was visible 24 hours a day, taking its place alongside the flood of other signage and graffiti that marks the city as a place of passage.

Description:

The message “EVERYBODY’S GOT A LITTLE LIGHT UNDER THE SUN” appeared at the Toronto Sculpture Garden in the spring of 2005. This message was written upon an LED sign that framed a climbing dome situated beneath a large mirror ball, in a park. The electric sign and the mirror ball’s motor were powered by two different sources: solar panels captured available sunlight and converted it to electrical energy to power the motor of the mirror ball; alternately, bicycle pedals attached to hidden electrical generators also transformed visitors’ muscle power into electricity to power the LED sign and make the text visible.

Description:

A precise recreation of Toronto’s official nuclear fallout shelter, built in 1962 at the height of Cold War tension, allowed Torontonians to explore the interior of the shelter as it was before it was dismantled in 1996. For one night, Cold War Toronto was brought back to life.

• In the midst of a classroom set, materials such as paper, ink and brushes were provided to visitors. The only instructions they were given were written on a wall: "THE SHAPE OF FEAR WALL" and "THE SHAPE OF HOPE WALL". With the materials provided, visitors produced text and images in response to that.

• The exhibition included a reading area ("reference area", A. MacDonell), which put several documents at the disposal of visitors: photocopies of information gathered by the artist during his personal research into the Cold War, governmental graphics (municipal, provincial and federal) of the era estimating the impact of a possible nuclear attack on Toronto and the country, as well as cartoons of the '50s and '60s. A section consisted of the formal message issued by the Government concerning the Cold War. A second section included the media of the time who responded to this message.

The artwork was dismantled by the public at the end of the night of the exhibition. There exists no comprehensive documentation about the presence of literature in this work. No order was established to read the text of the work. It is read in an autonomous and random manner. No hierarchy is established in the text incorporated into the set, neither that which was created by the artist nor that which was created by the public, nor those contained in the various documents displayed in the reading area.

History

History:

Galerie FMR organized a manifestation of public art on the site of the future Place Valois. Seven artists took on the ghostly character of the current site and invested the expropriated properties at the corner of Ontario and Valois Streets. They proposed a reflection on urbanity as seen as the gauge for the "user-friendliness" of a public space, a space which the public needs to take possession of. The demolition of buildings marked the end of this event, but also the end of an era.
