History:

In 2005, the Amérique Baroque / Barroca America symposium offered a wide range of multidisciplinary artworks, lectures, concerts and performances. Visitors discovered 11 new site-specific installations, new trails and facilities conducive to friendly gatherings and afternoons spent surrounded by natural beauty. Building this artistic dream is a gradual process, culminating in a place devoted to in situ art, multidisciplinarity and exchanges spanning the Americas.

Description:

Large panels feature various texts. The art work consists of three installations and evokes an encounter. The first installation that appeals to the traveller consists of three rectangular pieces of cotton that hang respectfully from surrounding trees. The second installation consists of a flat, heart-shaped stone covered with moss and dry leaves, and surrounded by hundreds of smaller gray stones. In the final installation, a short text invites the traveller inside the structure to lay down a stone softly and choose a gift.

Inipi est la "sweat lodge" ou loge à transpirer, le rite le plus ancien des Natifs d'Amérique, commun à toutes les tribus. En langue lakota, inipi signifie "naître encore" : dans l'inipi, enveloppé par la vapeur purificatrice du rite, l'individu renaît à une conscience nouvelle, à une lucidité nouvelle quant à son rôle et à son destin. Tu regardes tu es regardé par le ciel, offert à la gravité de ce silence bleu. Tu retiens l’ombre et la lumière sous tes ailes puis les redonne à la terre. Très loin dans le vide tu vas unir ton passage à l’éternité. Le corps remplit l’espace et recouvre en même temps le corps de la terre. Par-dessus l’épaule de la vie tu vois la chute, la douleur qui demeurera. Les yeux ne sont jamais revenus du corridor où il n’y avait rien que l’origine retrouvée par la hauteur.

Quelques traits sur le mur de la grotte les couleurs de la bête la forme visible de la vie en ce mouvement le monde a commencé. Par le silence et la nuit la gravité du noir, la terre dans les mains qui tâtonnent ; par les galets, l’eau, les fruits l’oiseau secouant l’espace et le bruits des pas incertains nous avons commencé. Lumières éteintes, portes refermées au bout de l’horizon, le monde ne tenait qu’à un fil.

Description:

The work consists of three rectangular bases and a square base laid out on the ground. The bases are aligned at the bottom of the staircase so that they can be seen as soon as one arrives at the site. Each base features a perforation in the shape of a lake. Cones (representing trees) are arranged on the base. Perforated words surround each base. 2,000 bronze-cast characters are arranged on the bases. There are 10 different character models. Their sizes vary; the closer they are to the center, the taller they get. They also increase in numbers closer to the center. The characters are all directed towards the center.

According to the explanation panel, the work represents the migration of women and men across continental America. The work speaks of belonging to a place, of our dependence upon natural forces and of the difficulties faced by migrating populations. With this work, the artist wanted to emphasize the courage and strength of character of those who had to leave a place and migrate, both geographically and culturally, in the late 20th century.

The work was originally presented at the Jardin des Plantes, in Paris. In 2002, it was then moved and installed at the Jardins du Précambrien for the Espace et densité exhibition.
