Description:

The project acts as a mediated dialogue between three artists from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and three artists from Berlin, Germany. Prior to 1916, the city of Kitchener was known as Berlin. In both Kitchener and Berlin, local artists act as 'guides', choosing a site of particular significance to them and recounting a story in their mother tongue. The artists also act as 'interpreters' by responding to the videos in the other language with a simultaneous written translation based either on their knowledge of the other language or by creative guessing. The written 'translations' appear as subtitles.

Description:

Similar both to public signage and graffiti, Templates for Walking Theatre link language to municipal authority and to our personal capacities as citizens for creating new meaning. These graphic and linguistic borders mark differentiation upon the city landscape, and engage our partially free acts of negotiating through it. The Templates arise from an activist impulse: they elicit not only our contemplative faculties, but also new possibilities for our active, bodily behaviour in the streets.

Note(s):

In Templates for Walking Theatre, lines of text were applied directly on the floor or ground of various sites -- an apartment in Toronto, a train station in Cape Town, an art gallery in Detroit, the public sidewalk in Kitchener -- to be stepped upon and traversed as people make their various ways in the world. One message is legible when one approaches from one direction; and another message is legible when approaching from another direction.

Power at Home

Artwork theme:

The line between propaganda and advertising is a thin one. Star Power presents the viewer with a series of ads that mix communist iconography and images of hydro electricity. Bold and visually stopping, the images further confuse the question of who is in control of electrical power in Ontario: Is it some far left consortium, or is a company simply borrowing the radical chic of Soviet design as part of an ad campaign? Plastered onto construction boarding in downtown Kitchener, the origin and intent of the images remained elusive.

"As a way of introducing the theme of this year's forum, Power to the People, to the people of Kitchener, Ontario, I was asked to create a work for the ad-slots inside the buses of the local transit system. The result was three ad-like images that allude to the seduction of power." CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum - Kitchener), 2002, ran from September 21-29, 2002.

Description:

Passages translates "Never work", a slogan attributed to the Situationist International, into 18 different languages. Original handwritten translations were solicited from fellow artists and colleagues who were either first generation Canadian or from immigrant backgrounds. The translations often required participants to ask assistance from a parent or close relative. The signatures were digitally processed and lasercut in white signage vinyl and mounted outdoors onto the many windows and glass barriers of the second and third levels of the Kitchener City Hall. These signatures marked the site with a form of aesthetic graffiti that suggested freeform cultural discourse and social drift.
