Prior to 1916, the city of Kitchener was known as Berlin. In both Kitchener and Berlin, local artists act as 'guides', choosing a site of particular significance to them and recounting a story in their mother tongue. The artists also act as 'interpreters' by responding to the videos in the other language with a simultaneous written translation based either on their knowledge of the other language or by creative guessing. Bold and visually stopping, the images further confuse the question of who is in control of electrical power in Ontario: Is it some far left consortium, or is a company simply borrowing the radical chic of Soviet design as part of an ad campaign? Original handwritten translations were solicited from fellow artists and colleagues who were either first generation Canadian or from immigrant backgrounds. The translations often required participants to ask assistance from a parent or close relative. The signatures were digitally processed and lasercut in white signage vinyl and mounted outdoors onto the many windows and glass barriers of the second and third levels of the Kitchener City Hall.
