He asked artist Martin Creed to install this artwork on his building. Rennie made "Everything is going to be alright" his philosophy for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.

Growth is a sculpture featuring six 5-foot tall letters made of foam, felt and wheat grass, which spell out the word G*R*O*W*T*H. Grown in the bank for two weeks prior to opening, the water supply was then cut off for the duration of the exhibition, which resulted in the slow death of Growth. She said, she called me Lily, again. And he
insisted that I’m precious Jade. I told them
they can call me Lily, Jade, China, what-
ever; makes no difference. They’re all the
same thing. They tell me I am so beautiful
and special, that I should feel proud to be
different. Am I supposed to be flattered? As
if he’s some kind of expert and she’s my
sister. Why do they believe that they know
me better than I know myself? What do
they want from me? My love? My loyalty?
My forgiveness?

She said, I began to say no, you have
mistaken, I am not your Asia. It’s not like
you, I’m told. When I assert myself, my
thoughts, my feelings, my story, am I
behaving unnaturally? No, I must insist
that you listen: I refuse the labels, the
masks, I refuse to identify with your image
of me. Why should your dream live on at
the expense of my self, my life? Give it up.
I will not give in. Because when I begin to
Forget who I am, where I’m from, I will also
Begin to forget that I have begun to forget.
As if change* does not occur. As if I am as I
have always been, unchanging.

West Side Story

Brand new house with large lot, facing
exclusive golf course/country club. Very
quiet, close to the river.
I was nine, in a new school in a new neigh-
borhood. We had made it, we had moved
to the West side. Here, we are poised on
the edge of the university lands, destined
to study in higher places.

Wall-to-wall carpeting, three bathroom, a
rec room, my own bed room. And a large
back yard with a fish pond my father built
in the far corner, so far away that I could
hardly see it from the house.

I didn’t know why I was called that. I didn’t
know what it meant. All I knew was that it
hurt to hear it, made me draw back, it
made me turn inward and become silent. I
suppose it was the way it was said.

The pond was stocked with gold fish, and
one summer a frog came to live there. It
was large and dark green and very loud. I
didn’t know how it got there, since our
yard was surrounded by a tall wooden
fence, but there it was. Then one day, it
was gone.

I became quiet and withdrawn. My world
shrank backwards and inside out. I felt
powerless and constantly under scrutiny.
I was vulnerable and did not know yet how to
fight back. Each day I feared being singled
out, to be made fun of, to be taunted, to
have my Chineseness become the object
of derision, for me to experience deep,
deep shame for being so special, so differ-
ent.

Black Night

Black night. A wavering sea of red and blue
light coloured my skin.

Surrounded. To serve and protect. I guess
they were just doing their job.

Bad Boys, Bad Boys, watcha gonna do?
I didn’t do anything wrong, really.

My warm flesh pressed against cold metal.
Do you have a record? No, officer, I only
have CD’s.

If Refugee, press 1, Landed Immigrant,
press 2, Asian Gang Member, press 3. You
speak English? My whole life flashed.

Want to see my records? Do I look like the
criminal type? Going to measure the size
of my skull? Stained. Weeks to get the ink
off your fingers, they say. I pay my taxes.

THE UNITED COLORS OF… what? It is my
brown skin, black hair, almond-shaped
eyes? You just happened to be at the
wrong place at the wrong time.

Common morning   activities   accom-
plished within a few seconds : turn off the
tap,   open   the   curtains, take   off   the
kettle, pour the water, open the fridge,
pour the milk, replace the carton, close
the   fridge,   close    the    bathroom   door.
Once    inner   adhesions    give    way,
Common    motions    break    down,    are
Significant   tasks   in   themselves.

The man chased the woman out onto
the deck. He flailed at her with a long
plank of wood; she held her own with a
metal coat rack.
The deck doors are constantly left
open. Often he has his son or daughter
down on the living room floor while he
pummels and kicks them, screaming
hoarsely. Or else the woman is chasing
them with a cooking pot. Squalls of
words swirl about them.

Although small and plain, the backyard
is used to its fullest capacity. Many
nights in summer, the whole family sleeps
outside, the man, the woman, the three
teenaged sons, the young daughter. Each
has their own cot, blankets and sheets.
An electric alarm on an extension cord
wakes them up for work.

Two motions deliberated carefully and
then she must sit down, exhausted, beside
the window. She can just see the heads
of two people in another house carrying
on a conversation. Nodding civilly back
and forth. Normality.

The law required them to build a two
car garage and put in a driveway. This
left little space for a garden. The week
before they moved in, the grandmother,
old and tiny, almost doubled over, built
up a garden in the driveway. They parked
their car on the street.

Several times each year, the young girl
can be heard screaming, over and over,
“Why don’t you just kill me you bastard,
oh I want to die, I want to die”. When
the police come, the mother and daughter
are helped out of the house and they
drive away.
Recently the young girl came home
from the hospital with a baby. The
stepfather has since bought a new car
and dresses more respectably.

Last year they tried to get rid of the son,
dangerously full grown now and as sour
as the father, by paying his way back to
the homeland. He came back after a few
months; no change.

This was in mid-November and she had
a miraculous garden of giant bok choy
and cabbage under plastic. She tended
it every day; with slow, precise move-
ments, she would lift the plastic, the
wind blowing, then prune and weed and
water. Meanwhile the other houses’
legitimate garden spaces lay fallow, open
to the winter weather.

"The viewer could take it or leave it. The static nature of the image allowed people to study the image and assign meaning to it in ways that are different from how they would approach the moving images they usually saw presented there. The picture suggests that some action is desired of the reader, i.e.: save me but the "product" is ambiguous and open to many interpretations. The photographs are nineteenth century cartes de visite. The image held in the woman's hand shows a long dead quadriplegic civil war veteran in a studio. The man's hand holds a picture of a black man with what appears to be sugar cane on his shoulder. The red stripes are positioned as if they were a "comp" that would later be the place where the explanatory text would be placed. The image is an extended set of puns intended to connote diverse readings. The overall shape is like a flag, the predominant colours are red and black, the woman's hand is the "distaff" side, the action is in the present but the images proferred refer to memory and the past but their meaning is determined by the present use of them as historical documents. This was the first digital work I produced for exhibition."

Description:

Rebecca Belmore and Osvaldo Yero used ice to make a new artwork melt during the long sleepless night of the Nuit Blanche festival. A large block of ice signified a life-size form, the absent body, as evidence that it, too, will disappear. This work symbolically suggested the frozen land of Canada in winter.

Description:

DREAM.big consists of six decorative screens spelling out the word ‘DREAM’ in giant letters. Modular in construction, these screens do not obscure the building’s face. The word ‘DREAM’ appears, then disappears, only to reappear again as one passes. The colours of the screens, selected to symbolize the colours of ammonite (Alberta’s provincial gemstone), also ‘shifts’ as one passes by.
