The objects are things you would normally carry in your pockets: notes, bus tickets, loose change, etc." About the door and window frames: Our intention is to raise questions around ideas of ownership of and entitlement to the city: whose city? Do we feel the city belongs to us because it is 'public'? Or do we think of entitlement in terms of private property: what we own or don't own?" Regarding the weathervanes: "The turning of the signs in the wind functions as metaphor for shifting notions of community, place, and a sense of entitlement we feel as citizens." "The title "Right to the City" comes from the urban theorist Henri Lefebvre's text by the same name which calls for a different envisioning of the city: for it to be organized for, and belong to, its inhabitants, rather than organized for profit. The elements in this project explore the contradictions and ambiguities of public and private space. Although we can identify in general with Vancouver as 'our city', as belonging to the public, space in the city is clearly delineated: either it belong to you or id doesn't. The space along Nanaimo is technically public space, and unlike the neighbouring yards, anyone can go on this space. However, in the larger scheme of things, do we feel entitled to it as a space? We're interested in drawing attention to the public nature of this space and the claims made on the city. Related to these ideas, this artwork addresses the ephemeral, shifting nature of the site, both in terms of the physical environment and cultural priorities. This area was once a vacant lot and is now a small park. We hope the work will open up a space for contemplation and reconsideration on the meaning of these transitions. This is a chance to look at the neighbourhood in another way, and by extension, the city."</p><p style="text-align: justify;">&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Source: City of Vancouver (2008). <em>Public Art Registry</em>.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://vancouver.ca/PublicArt_Net/ArtworkDetails.aspx?ArtworkID=429">http://vancouver.ca/PublicArt_Net/ArtworkDetails.aspx?ArtworkID=429</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-biblio"> <div class="field-label">Document(s):&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd label-above"> <a href="/en/biblio/2002">Public Art in Vancouver. Not knowing what to do with the space, the city decided... not to make any decision about it. And so, the park was left as it was, a white space on the map of the city. A fence prohibiting access to the park insured that the default decision would not be countermanded by use of the space. DARE-DARE moved into the park in 2006, opening the fence, and printed business cards with the intriguing mention "located in a park with no name". The name of Victoria Park connects it to colonial England, and places it in several contexts; a local context as the main downtown square and a global context as a member of a worldwide "club" of Victoria Parks. Similarly, the architecture that surrounds the park is influenced by international styles and trends of the last 100 years, with often regional characteristics that allow the buildings to co-exist and form the spatial edge of the park. New works by Rachelle Viader Knowles and Don Gill explored Victoria Park today: as a concept and a place, juxtaposed with a history of Victoria Park and the buildings which rose around it. Rachelle Viader Knowles' work included a video installation/link-up with her niece in Victoria Park, Cardiff, Wales, and an intervention in Regina's Park. The words "Think of England" were inscribed on the ground cover. Don Gill created a photo-based "archive" of the neighbourhoods he traverses, in and around Victoria Park, including the buildings examined in the exhibition.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-mentionslegalesillust"> <div class="field-label">Mention(s) légale(s) des illustrations:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd label-above"> Copyright détenu par les artistes et dont la permission a été obtenue auprès de ceux-ci </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-crdit-photographique"> <div class="field-label">Photo credits:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd label-above"> © Rachelle Viader Knowles </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-texte"> <div class="field-label">Text of the artwork:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd label-above"> <p>Think of England</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-thet field-inline"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd label-inline"> <div class="field-label field-label-inline-first"> Text theme:&nbsp;</div> England </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-theo field-inline"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd label-inline"> <div class="field-label field-label-inline-first"> Artwork theme:&nbsp;</div> <p>Colonization, British colonial assimilation, cultural and national identity</p> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-historique"><legend>History</legend><div class="field field-type-text field-field-hist field-inline"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd label-inline"> <div class="field-label field-label-inline-first"> History:&nbsp;</div> <p style="text-align: justify;">Part of the Regina Public Library Centennial Celebrations,&nbsp;<em>Think of England</em>&nbsp;was left untended once the show was over, and gradually disappeared.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Organized by Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina. As an artist, much of the work I do explores communication and relationships between people and places. Within the context of the Regina Public Library, I wanted to make works that use words. The text 'Think of England', inserted into Victoria Park which sits in front of the Dunlop Art Gallery, is both political in its historical instruction to respect and consider a ‘motherland’ and a critique as a question posed to the reader – what do YOU think of England? It is also a personal question posed to and by myself as someone born there, unsure of how to address nationhood, national affiliation, a sense of longing and belonging to place, as someone who grew up English as a ‘foreigner’ in Wales and lives as a ‘foreigner’ here, both places where local languages were systematically suppressed through acts of attempted eradication by the English."</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Annette Hurting, Bernard Flaman (2008). <em>The Sun Never Sets: Victoria in Context</em>.
