Homage to Parenthood is a six-panel public art installation on display at the Canada Line Brighouse Station. On the panels are 100 clichés, idioms and sayings written in colours that mirror those of the rainbow.

"I began the project by writing down all the sayings that my dad would use, and then did research on commonly used idioms and clichés from North America, which are incredibly culturally specific. From there, I had tons to choose from and the process really moved into the editing phase. It was a lot like writing a 100-line poem. The phonetic flow of each line was really important, along with the interconnected meaning. There are blocks of text that thematically relate to one another." Toni Latour

Inhale consists of 15 laminated and tempered glass panes and ceramic frit, treated with sandblast and acid etch. Stephanie Caribou, Bobby Coutu, Gabriel Kematch, Samantha Hiebert, Destiny Dawn Sutherland, five Aboriginal/Metis youth-at-risk, were chosen for the opportunity to learn from an Elder the customary use of ceremonial flags. They were taught for five weeks by artistic professionals to learn skills in community development as well as artistic and practical skills in digital media. They worked with Aboriginal artists Scott Stephens (photographer ), Sébastien Aubin (designer) and KC Adams (visual artist). The five artists set out to engage in the local Aboriginal community by photographing participants at The Manito Ahbee International Competition Pow Wow competition in November of 2008.After digitally altering their photographs to create a total of 90 flags, the images were compiled to create 3 public artworks, three billboards fitting 30 flags each.

"I created a series of projects, interventions, and publications designed to fit specifically with the structure of the conference. The Airport Pick-Ups volunteers formed a welcoming committee. This team picked up out-of-towners at the airport holding a banner that read 'WE ARE HERE FOR YOU' and drove them to their host’s home. This same team also drove the participants back to the airport to catch their departing flights, as well as provided a shuttle service to and from the university during the conference."

The Transpositions exhibition was created over a 3-year period. Works are divided into 3 categories: portraiture, landscape and flora (nature); and advertising. This arwork was created for the advertising platform posters of the SkyTrain stations. The work of 20 Canadian artists extends 24 km along the SkyTrain route from Vancouver to Surrey. Four to seven works are installed randomly amongst the advertising at the following seven stations: Waterfront, Burrard, Grandville, Broadway, Metrotown, New Westminster and Scott Road.

I commented on how difficult it

seemed for some men of

Chinese ancestry to

consider Chinese

women as

beautiful,

or if

beautiful,

then as desirable.

Martin, whose wife is

of German descent, admitted

that he still had that problem.

Cornelio was surprised. In Hawaii,

where he grew up, Asians were

always thought of as

more beautiful.

He said

this with a

certain sadness,

for although he was a

good-looking guy, it was never

Asians who found him attractive.

The very

thought disgusted her.

Why would she ever want to

do anything like that, she demanded.

Kissing one would be like kissing her

brother. And going out with

a Chinese guy would

feel, simply put,

incestuous.

I caught her

staring at me. She

looked so Chinese to me, too.

I was surprised by the touch of her

skin-it was true, it was so smooth. So

was mine, she said. And after awhile I

began to look at Asian women,

something that I never before

could bring myself

to do.

I asked her about her preferences.

She said that although she didn’t

exactly prefer white men over

anybody else, they seemed

to gravitate towards her.

Besides, she couldn’t

find any other men

who could turn

her on in the

same way.

He was relatively open-minded, he

said, for someone who grew up in

Winnipeg 50 years ago. For

instance, he didn’t mind

his daughter going out

with anyone non-

Chinese, as

long as he

wasn’t

white.

The series follows on the success of two previous public art exhibitions hosted by BC Transit – TRANSPOSITIONS in 1990 and ARTROPOLIS in 1991.
