May 15 2002 1130 in the morning I’ve been dying to get started on this piece I’m not completely sure this is going to work, but this is where the energy is and who am I to question the will of budding consciousness or try to explain the wordless mysteries within the creative process Anyway lets leave those larger musings for the poets and philosophers and return to the task at hand which is to cover this van with words then I'll cut them out with the plasma cutter creating a fragile latticework of language a cage a screen we see everything through I like the idea that the words let light in and allow you to see inside yet simultaneously weakens the thing. There are inadequacies even lies inherent within the framework of language that perhaps we might reflect upon from time to time to deflate the arrogance that accompanies knowledge. I’d love to park the van and plant flowers inside it.

Ice letters were made as memorials to honour those who have passed away. «Friend» was created in memory of the artist's friend Peter Kemp who died in the summer of 2007 in a hiking accident.

Description:

In the hall, a wing hangs diagonally from the ceiling to the floor. It is made of 360 aluminium feathers, a reference to the angels that used to be very present in religious sculpture. A dialogue is created with a commemorative plaque on the wall and on the floor, which features the names of 360 families that were identified in the 2002 census in the municipality.

The current St. Charles presbytary was built in 1840. In order to respond to new realities, the building now serves both as presbytery and as offices for the municipality. Thus, the two facets of administrative, civil and religious life are housed under one roof.

Note(s):

Installed at a street intersection where people are forced to pause, this sign asks one to also pause one's mind, "to hold that thought," if for only a moment. The temporal nature of this fleeting moment becomes a unique and personal experience for each viewer.

Thought and language are intimately connected. We cannot have a thought without also having the words we would use to express that thought to another. Streets can be viewed as the physical arteries of a city… When you try to hold a thought, the mind wanders, other thoughts intrude and displace, thoughts flow through our minds in the same way blood flows through our veins.

Unveiling and dedication of the first commissioned work of art, executed by Spanish born Jordi Bonet of Mont St. Hilaire, Quebec, on October 15, 1972.

The seven tongued Sculptured Pentecostal Flame Symbol, denoting “renewal and vitality” was adopted by the Session for the bold new concept of St. Andrew’s Place. The twelve foot diameter casting of the sculptured symbol is located over the main entrance to the complex.

In keeping with the traditions of Church buildings, the Narthex is dominated by the dramatic and symbolically rich entrance to the Sanctuary. The outer surfaces of the three entrance doors bear a “triptych” of cast aluminum, deep relief, sculptured panels. Like the magnificent Flame Sculpture, these three panels [of a total of eight] were commissioned from Jordi Bonet, and whose symbolism is based on the “I AM” statements of St. John’s Gospel.

The inner panels of the Sanctuary doors are equally dramatic. Using themes from the Gospels, the artist has expressed them as striking contemporary statements of ancient symbols of the beliefs and tenets of the Christian Faith.

“LOVE” on the right door, using a richly textured abstraction of the central Christian motif.

At a level about midway between the Foyer and the second floor is the entrance door to a small, non-denomination Chapel which is always open for personal meditation and for small group use.

Known as the Peace Chapel, its entrance door bears the last two of the sculptured panels by Jordi Bonet. The outer panel declares “PEACE” in text of twelve of the many languages spoken in the multi-cultural Sudbury community. The inner panel depicts “Providence” as the “Hand of Gold” holding persons securely in life.

During the winter of 1969, sculptor Jordi Bonet paints the great mural of the Grand Théâtre de Québec. According to the architect Victor Prus, who designed the building, "it is,one of the first times in the history of contemporary art that visual arts are fully integrated into architecture."

Fueled by this desire for integration, the sculptor began a process to complete the thematic unity between the artwork and the function of the building. Jordi Bonet and his assistants improvised a way to give life to matter, without first making a model. "A cry of love launched into the world", says poet Claude Peloquin, to whom we owe the controversial texts written on the wall.
