Description:

The artist offered an itinerary in the gallery and outside.

The MAI's eight windows were blocked up to present text fragments in fluorescent lettering.

Posters announcing lost cats were distributed on walls and lampposts throughout the surrounding streets. The poster was touched up by the artist, though he took care of preserving all the information.

On the other side of the large windows, the MAI's exhibition hall was plunged in darkness. Four stations were indicated on the ground. A soundtrack and projection were associated with each one.

Galerie du MAI gave carte blanche to Michael Fernandes, a Canadian artist known for his artwork and his ecclectic body of work. During an artist residency in Montreal, he shot short video, almost too simple little stories. One potato, two potato... is a game, a random game, but it is also a change of roles, a turn of events. This artwork traces a quest for identity in tongue-in-cheek style.

Description:

The work is divided into two parts:

This poetic fable is inspired by one of the greatest myths in the history of the world. The installation was set in a small green square with a tall tree, downtown Granby.

In the windows of the shop surrounding the square, videos about the local zoo's animals in their daily routines were projected.

"You have water, and the word water. You have love and the word love, but the two will never meet. We will lie beneath the letters in a haze of diaphanous pollution and probability, weighing our odds. I love you at the end of a phone call, it hovers, before the click signaling the end of a sentence, then it falls like equivocal truth. We are mostly water. We are mostly love. We are trying to quit smoking and sugar. We are ridding the body of the word Body. We hold red fruit between our teeth. Our gum-lines pink softened typewriter ribbon. We wrap our meat singing corporate jingles. Not dental insurance and you can carry orajel in your purse to stave off crying jags of frustration. You are my heart, and you are my heart stitched into a canvas. I hold thirty coffee beans. I count caloric value. You have water, the word water, and the body is mostly. We hold ours close. Words Travel Fast featured the poetry of Toronto-based writers who reflect on the experience of urban life. Description:

A precise recreation of Toronto’s official nuclear fallout shelter, built in 1962 at the height of Cold War tension, allowed Torontonians to explore the interior of the shelter as it was before it was dismantled in 1996. For one night, Cold War Toronto was brought back to life.

• In the midst of a classroom set, materials such as paper, ink and brushes were provided to visitors. The only instructions they were given were written on a wall: "THE SHAPE OF FEAR WALL" and "THE SHAPE OF HOPE WALL". With the materials provided, visitors produced text and images in response to that.

• The exhibition included a reading area ("reference area", A. MacDonell), which put several documents at the disposal of visitors: photocopies of information gathered by the artist during his personal research into the Cold War, governmental graphics (municipal, provincial and federal) of the era estimating the impact of a possible nuclear attack on Toronto and the country, as well as cartoons of the '50s and '60s. A section consisted of the formal message issued by the Government concerning the Cold War. A second section included the media of the time who responded to this message.

The artwork was dismantled by the public at the end of the night of the exhibition. There exists no comprehensive documentation about the presence of literature in this work. Description:

This large installation is spread over four sites: from the square in front of the building; in the lobby; above the main staircase; and in the reading rooms of the library. A spiral unifies the different parts. The central column, located in the building's lobby, is covered with mirrors and looks like an infinite screw. Taking into account the location, the piece constantly stresses linguistic references by including fragments of text in different languages, letters and signs.

Description:

The photographic installation refers to the plight of the Vietnamese Boat People who were locked up in detention centres in Hong Kong while they were seeking asylum. Installed in three Montreal Vietnamese restaurants, the artwork consists of four framed photographs representing the Whitehead Detention Centre, another photograph of the Hong Kong Sea presented in a light box, a videotape that shows, among others, images of a body of water and of a closed door. Visitors can get postcard reproductions of the artwork for a dollar. On the back of the cards, a text appears describing the scene. On the tables of the restaurants, table mats representing blue waves describes the situation of the Boat People and offer a definition of the term "refugee".
