Description:

Sculptural grouping consisting in four small components on which architectural motifs appear - volutes, banister, railing. Two larger components are also installed. A leafy tree and a samara are embedded, respectively, in the first one, shaped like a rectangular prism, and in the other, shaped like a column.

Description:

The artwork consists of two bas-reliefs and a sculpture mounted directly onto a concrete wall. On the narrow side of the wall, the literal bas-relief appears vertically, offering an Einstein quote. The other bas-relief consists of a spiral, displayed on the wide side of the wall. The sculpture, which represents a sun, a moon and a metal structure, is installed above that bas-relief, on top of the wall.

Description:

Three permanent installations refer to the activities of the center. The first component to be installed is FUNhouse: cast aluminum soccerballs, volleyballs and basketballs are imbedded into a concrete wall. Their mirror-like finish evokes the reflective surfaces found in a funhouse. The balls form the braille word for ’fun’.

Description:

A semi-circle of shattered glass screens with etched leaves is visible from the street and lit at night. In the courtyard is a 4,500 sq. ft. leaf-shaped pool; situated around it are black granite seats with a word carved into each like the title of a botanical drawing. The leaf pool is visible in it's entirety from the office suites above.

Furniture set: large tables in front of the school, great set of stairs in front of the hospital and large benches in the park. Forty-something apples are affixed to the furniture. Each apple features sentences commemorating the multi-ethnic culture of the neighbourhood.

Multi-ethnic culture of the neighborhood.

Artwork theme:

Deployed strategically at the top, center and bottom of the hill, the main sites constitute a family of public places identified by the use of tectonics and identical materials, as well as by the presence of a commemorative program recalling the identity of a former commune that defined the area at the time of its first subdivision. Together, the three sites anchor the improvement program of public spaces. Throughout the entire course, they are also intended as an affirmation of the value of street space within the collective sense of community.

History

History:

Produced as part of the Renouveau urbain program, which aims to revitalize urban neighborhoods physically and socio-economically.

This project aims to give an identity to the street, making it a place for commercial trade and an event destination to celebrate the cultural diversity of the neighbourhood.

Description:

The River is bench, it's a place to meet and it tells stories of the life-stream of Richmond. Through a sprinkling of text and photographs it paints a picture of the geographical origins of the Fraser and it tells tales of early pioneers, development of the city, ethnic changes and the struggle for sustainability. It is located just outside the entryway to the Thompson Community Centre.

A concrete form clad in ceramic tile and glass mosaic with acid etched or polished coloured concrete surfaces. The form represents the middle arm of the Fraser River plus the Fraser River as a whole, its winding route through the province that culminates with its path through Richmond. This form sits on a base of exposed aggregate. Some of the existing large rocks and boulders were retained and in these areas plants that reference the original design were planted.

Description:

Kinsmen Park New Washroom Building: The redesigned fieldhouse with washrooms incorporated sculptural chain link fence panels, stainless steel discs with sports action words bouncing around on them, polished stainless steel mirrors etched with words and a concrete floor cast with action words. The building's interior and exterior were painted deep orange and red.

The City of Surrey's Community Art Matching-funds Program (CAMP) and the Bridgeview Community Association partnered with artists Vallalee Hoffman and Claire Cilliers along with the Surrey Environmental Education Centre. Staff and volunteers from BCA and Surrey Environmental Education Centre were present, assisting the artists and participants during the creation of the tiles. BCA and SEEC provided information and presentations to participants. The concept for the mosaic walkway with pillar seating was proposed by Vallalee Hoffman. The original design ideas were fine tuned by the members of the "Building Bridges" Project Proposal Collaborative. Hoffman fabricated the pillar seats and hand-made clay tiles. She was employed from 2003-2004. The project took 1 year from planning to installation. Description:

Each of six twelve-meter high, bronze I-beam towers hold an image cut into a metal plate that illustrate the history of the area. The plates cast the shadow of the image onto the street. Texts etched in the limestone bases refer to the events relevant to the site. The positioning of the panels has been carefully calculated so that their optimum contrast and focus on the street is the month, date, and time that the event occurred. For example, if the sun is shining just before noon on June 17, the projected image of Vancouver's "Great Fire" will be visible on the promenade below

Artist statement: "An aspect of the work is meant to produce a light and shadow play… The bronze panels cast shadows of the captured (historical) images… References in the work are hybrids [influenced by] historic railway trestles, the Roundhouse turntable, a railway hand-car, billboard-like sign supports which were on the South shore of False Creek until the 1950s, drive-in movie theatre screens..." (From press release) Some of the residents in the condominiums next to the artwork started a campaign against the piece when it was installed, calling it a "malignant monstrosity." The piece had its supporters and detractors, and in the end, City Council supported the public art selection process and the work has survived the tests of time. At the South foot of Davie Street, bronze I-beams support images taken from Vancouver’s archives. The sculpture is carefully aligned to cast shadow images onto the sidewalk on the anniversary of the selected historical event. At night, from the tilted traffic circle opposite the sculpture, a light illuminates the panels. The form of the sculpture quotes a mixture of objects: railway trestles, hand-cars, turntables, billboards, drive-in movie screens, movie cameras, and suggests Vancouver’s transformation from an industrial centre to an information age economy.

Description:

A series of connecting high and low pools, with a waterfall made of overlapping black slate. A large glacial boulder sits in the upper pool and an identical cast bronze replica sits in the lower pool. Inscription cast in concrete beside the waterfall.

Description:

Sixteen in-ground markers and four above-ground markers are installed along the paths of four historical streams that once existed in Kitsilano. Each of the in-ground markers has the words LOST STREAM inscribed onto it, along with sets of words on two themes; first, along the edges, two-word phrases for the causes of the disappearance of the streams (e.g. “logging railway”) and second, in the centre, four kinds of animal and plant life that have disappeared (e.g. “sockeye, thimbleberry, lynx and fir”). A set of black and white photographs are installed, two for each stream path (images of trees).

The project took the artist a year to complete. Documentary version of the work presented at the Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Vancouver. Medium: 8 selenium-toned silver prints transmounted on plexiglass, conservation board, spruce frame and copper strip - each with a corresponding graphite rubbing on Strathmore paper

This project was the result of a long process of researching and photographing the local landscape and consultating members of the community, the Park Board and the School Board. The work consists of 16 in-ground and 4 above-ground markers installed along the paths of four historical streams that once existed in Kitsilano. Each of the in-ground markers has the words LOST STREAM engraved around the outer edge. Each marker also contains engraved words on two themes; first, along the edges, two-word phrases for the causes of the disappearance of the stream (e.g. "logging railway") and second, in the centre, four kinds of plant and animal life that have disappeared (e.g. "sockeye, thimbleberry, lynx and fir"). Artist Marion Penner Bancroft writes, "...my desire became to find a way of recalling what was now invisible, of marking the routes of the streams and in doing so, to call up an earlier image of this place, to bring some history into the present... I also installed at (Kitsilano) Community Centre a set of black and white photographs, two for each (stream) path. These are close up images of where the streams once were, paired with images of trees that are fed by the underground flows, those vestiges of another landscape."

Description:

The bases of steel and concrete columns have been covered in mosaic tiles depicting a variety of colourful flowers to create a "garden". Individual hand-crafted, textured tiles have been applied around the five column bases. Literary quotes are woven into the floral designs.

Description:

A sculptural installation consisting of two glass-roofed pavilions separated by approximately 120 metres. The elliptical roof of each pavilion is supported by two walls made of stainless steel with cut-out silhouettes of industrial and natural forms. A second component of Lookout is a perimeter railing with cantilevered glass panels. The panels are inscribed with sandblasted words, written especially for this site in consultation with poet Robin Blaser. Midway between the two pavilions, the cut-out images are cast into the concrete walkway. Also, the artists have placed 13 simple bronze chairs throughout the site. The artwork has an accompanying Website

As part of the urban plan for this area, the artwork sited along Marinaside Crescent also had to provide shelter from the rain. The selected artist team of Noel Best and Chris Dikeakos met this challenge by providing two glass-roofed sculptural pavilions that act as portals to the view looking out over False Creek.

Best and Dikeakos consulted with Vancouver poet Robin Blaser for the text piece sandblasted into the glass balcony surrounds. A third component, 13 beautifully designed plywood chairs reminiscent of the economy of lunchroom furniture, were cast in bronze and distributed throughout the three balcony lookouts
