• Spirit Bears. In 2005-2006, the city partnered with the Two Rivers Gallery and the BC Lions Society to bring the Spirit Bear program to Prince George. Life size fiberglass Kermode bears were transformed into works of art by local artists. These were auctioned off for charity and a few are still displayed for public viewing.

Description:

This pair of allegorical doors were created to identify the limits of Toronto’s Chinatown, the neighbourhood name for this now predominantly Asian community. Gateway is based on the ancient script form of the Chinese characters for’ gateway’ and uses the supporting poles as part of the calligraphic notation for the word. The upper portion of the character depicts four intertwining and metamorphosing venerable mythological figures, cast in fiberglass: Feng Huang (associated with the Phoenix), Long (Dragon), Sun Hou Zi (Monkey King) and Qilin (associated with the Unicorn). This linguistic lexicon has the same meaning in Korean, Japanese and pre-colonial Vietnamese, reflecting historic as well as contemporary cross-cultural pollinations. The metaphorical gateways signal the transition from one community into another and reflect the social heritage of Spadina Avenue, where, traditionally, one culture displaces another as new waves of immigrants arrive in the city.

Description:

The work consists of nine suspended sculptures, approximately eight hundred small, colourful isosceles triangles and nine sentences or words, all attached to the ceiling. Each sculpture is associated with a theme, a colour and an itinerary represented by triangles of the same colour and a sentence or word.

According to the artist, the green apple evokes "food" and is associated with the sentence "CE SOIR, J’AI RENDEZ-VOUS AVEC GWENAËLLE". The orange leaf represents "the week-end" and is associated with the question "QU’EST-CE QU’ON FAIT EN FIN DE SEMAINE ?. The sentence "SURTOUT ATTENDRE JUSQU’AU DERNIER MOMENT" is written next to a purple gift, which represents "the joy of suspending". The maroon cellular phone is associated with the sentence "ET DIRE QUE DEMAIN ÇA RECOMMENCE" and evokes "work", while the red heart and the the sentence "TU M’AS MANQUÉ (E) …" represent "love". The yellow sun represents "friendship" and is associated with the word "KATIA !" Description:

Sculptural sign consisting of two white steel beams that are linked at the top by eight corrugated fiberglass panels. It evokes a signboard shaped as an arch, such as ones used in institutions and public buildings. This semi-transparent construction diffuses daylight. At night, a lighting system that has been integrated to the outer panels generates artificial light. Inside one of the two beams, three vertical metal strips have been integrated, one of which features an inscription.

Interface, the arch/signal located outside the building, is the work of artist Francis Dallegret. Produced to mark the new vocation of this place (old School of Fine Arts), it was designed and produced under the program to integrate art into the architecture put together by the Government of the province of Quebec. La Maison du Conseil des Arts was inaugurated on May 31, 1989.

The sculpture is inserted in an aluminium box and embedded into a brick wall. The surface made of a green resin plywood and represents a playground. A median line and two goal areas mark out its borders. Two rows of stylized aligned bare feet face each other. The text is written on a wall plate.
