Description:

A large meeting table constructed of snow and ice bears a simplified map of Regina. Various city buildings and infrastructure are represented in moveable ice blocks, which participants are invited to place on the map, thus creating their ideal vision of their city.

Mathew Walker of the sculpture department assisted in designing the two large wooden moulds for the Uncover pieces. The ice works were left to follow their own course and melt over time.

Description:

RESOURCE is a series of 7-foot high letters cast in ice. The process involved creating wooden forms for each letter, which were then carried out onto Lake Nippissing, stood upright and filled with water. They used a pump to get water from the lake. The hole they dug with the auger showed the lake ice to be 18 to 24 inches deep. The forms were left to freeze for two weeks and then they were unmoulded the day before the opening.

Outdoor installation, which consisted of a frozen wedding dress that children could crawl under, frozen sheets and shirts, plus letters made of ice that spelled "Mémoire de glace" (Ice Memory) and "Équilibre fragile" (Fragile Balance).

Description:

Outdoor installation on the Yukon river in 2009. Moulds were made out of wood and set out on the river. Water was pumped into the moulds from holes made in the icy river's surface. They were left to freeze and then the letters were unmoulded.

This winter I was in Toronto working on a project based on the book The Municipal Mind, by the city's poet laureate, Pier Giorgio Di Cicco. His eloquent writing, about how the vibrancy of a city depends on the creative spirit of the individuals who occupy it, has inspired me to create random, ephemeral installations on its streets and in its parks. I am interested in how we negotiate space in an urban environment, how we create community out of the chaos.

My words are made out of ice - a medium that exemplifies the transient nature of all things. In the city, the poetic melting of the ice word is often interrupted by the aggressive acts of the inhabitants, so it is more crucial for me to document the work once it is up.

Description:

Rebecca Belmore and Osvaldo Yero used ice to make a new artwork melt during the long sleepless night of the Nuit Blanche festival. A large block of ice signified a life-size form, the absent body, as evidence that it, too, will disappear. This work symbolically suggested the frozen land of Canada in winter.
