Description:

A planisphere is cast on the ground at the entrance of the school. This map of Earth is coupled with excerpts from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. A block of letters is embedded in the wall. At first, it looks like an abstract mosaic but then words reveal themselves in the manner of a crisscross word puzzle.

The Earth map was inspired by a map drawn by Buckminster Fuller in 1927. It presents an uninterrupted view of Earth.

The mural is made of stones from different regions of the globe. The ensemble as a whole evokes a crisscross word puzzle. It contains fifteen decipherable words, written in every direction. The words are trades that children still practice today somewhere in the world.

Description:

Sculpture consisting of two elements reproducing on a large scale the specific motifs of an Inuit string game and of a brass inlay work installed in the floor's surface. In the Inuit language, the word "Ayarak" means string. Its two ends are tied together and used to make different figures.

Description:

The [seven] History Posts, a series of illuminated columns, line the walkway to the airport. Each is silk-screened with a photograph taken from archives, accompanied by a descriptive text. Walking through this narrative offers travellers a glimpse of some of the important milestones in the airport’s growth, from its beginnings in 1929 to 2003, with the new facility, Waterloo Regional Airport gracing the end of the path.

The Region of Waterloo Airport had its beginnings in 1929 as the K-W Airport. Its origin and location at Lexington Field was largely the work of local businessmen

Norman Schneider and Robert Dietrich.

1934

The K-W Airport was one of only four locations in Canada to be favoured by a visit of the British Hawker Fury fighters in 1934. Led by Wing Commander Pirie, the crowd of ten thousand was treated to an exhibition of formation flying for an admission price of ten cents.

1934

In the early years of aviation, many women were attracted by the excitement of flying. In 1934, twenty year old Mary M. Weber earned her private pilot’s license through the K-W Flying Club at the Lexington airfield. The club’s two training airplanes were the “Miss Kitchener” and the “Miss Waterloo”.

Trade Minister C.D. Howe initiated work on the new Waterloo Wellington airfield in 1949. With Howe at the opening ceremony was one of the local airport founding members – Norman Schneider (at the right of the picture).

Garf’s Flying Service was roundly congratulated on their first scheduled air service flight in 1951 by founding airport pioneers Norman Schneider and Robert Dietrich. The early morning flights to Malton would allow passengers to connect to many national and international destinations from there.

1959

The Waterloo Wellington Flying Club held its first ever forty-eight hour flying marathon in 1959. The club kept one of its planes in the air at all times during the marathon.

1974

In 1969 and 1973, the control tower and airport terminal building, respectively, were added to the landscape. Extensions of 1500 feet and 1800 feet were made to runway 07/25 in 1984 and 2003, respectively. The terminal building was replaced in 2003 with the new facility at the end of this path which recognizes the Region of Waterloo’s commitment to progressive service provision for both citizens and visitors.

"In researching the development of this airport, I was intrigued to learn about Mary Weber. At 20 years old, she learned to fly at what was then Lexington Field, and was the fifth woman in Canada to receive a pilot's licence. This 'discovery' initiated the History Posts, a series of illuminated columns along the walkway. Each is silk-screened with a photograph taken from archives, accompanied by a descriptive text. Walking through this narrative offers travelers a glimpse of some of the milestones important to the airport's growth, from its beginnings in 1929 to 2003 with the new facility, Waterloo Regional Airport gracing the end of the path. A grouping of mobiles extends across the grassy area in front of the airport terminal. Each comprises two branches of leaves poised above a slender pole. The branches turn slowly with the currents of air, embodying the poetics of wind and flight."

Description:

Sculptural and environmental installation featuring a floor mosaic, a suspended sculpture and a high relief affixed to the ceiling of the rotunda. First, a polychromic mosaic on the ground represents a gridded map of the world, where continents are shown as aquatic masses and the oceans as continents. Second, brass words are inlaid into the mosaic - Pacifica, Atlantica, Indica, Arctica. Third, suspended to the ceiling, a mirror crescent moon reflects the image of the Earth and hides a globe in its upper section. Last, a star protruding from the rotunda completes the composition.

The hospital's first church was built by the Charon brothers. It was built in 1693. The existing stone wall on the site dates back to the original construction.

In 1872, the chapel was demolished in good part to allow for the extension of St-Pierre Street.

In 1991, the stone wall and the vestry (built in 1771) were restored.

Description:

A concrete wall features a series of drawers like those used in archival filing. A square plate seems to jump out of one of the drawers. Numbers 1 to 16 appear on it. A grille is superimposed onto this plate, evoking the graphic marker used by printers to make printed characters legible. The shadows created by the numbers move on the wall according to the time of day, in the way of a sundial. A stainless steel alphabet is laid out on the rear of the wall. An anvil is balanced on top, integrating a brass frame.

Description:

The work consists of a hanging low relief sculpture and an installation in the floor's surface. The hanging sculpture is a reproduction of a maple tree samara. A plaque shaped like a wild cherry tree leaf is embedded in the ground, while eight bronze low reliefs have been installed on the walls so as to allow students to touch them. Each of the low reliefs present a motif - milkweed, linden berries, a blackbird nest, an embryo, an oak acorn, a beech nut, a bean and a gentian leaf. A short text is engraved under a small samara and talks about our passage on Earth.

Description:

Inspired by the former function of the building, a fire station, the artist created a system of ladders that unfold into a spiral, evoking the fenestration. Wings are added to these, flight devices associated with the act of ascending, like ladders. As the library is a place of discovery and knowledge, it is a window onto itself and the world, a concept that is also present in the artwork with its constant back and forth movement between the local and the universal. Thus, twenty-four glass panes present fragments of a text by a Dolbeau resident, while displaying the symbols of the Greek alphabet. In addition, binoculars are installed on a sculptural element evoking a globe's swivel pin. They can be used to look more closely at details of the work, but especially to take note of its final element, its treasure, a world atlas filled with knowledge.

Description:

Inspired by the "paper doll", a high-relief represents a dress. The back and front are juxtaposed so reversed, one above the other. The lower part (the front) shows a pattern of "root" or "branch". An expression in Irish language, AGUS MHARIDHAR DO GO GO GLIONDRACH WD, inscribed on a metal plate below the high-relief, is none other than the translation of the title.
