The Symbiosis Collective and four guest artists collaborated on an artistic "occupation" at a former branch of the Royal Bank. Growth is a sculpture featuring six 5-foot tall letters made of foam, felt and wheat grass, which spell out the word G*R*O*W*T*H. Grown in the bank for two weeks prior to opening, the water supply was then cut off for the duration of the exhibition, which resulted in the slow death of Growth. It is part of «The Bank of Symbiosis», a larger exhibition that also includes "Take Heart", an installation.

Description:

The sun never sets refers both to Regina's status as "The Queen City", named after Queen Victoria Regina, and the brilliant prairie sunshine that bathes its streets and parks. The name of Victoria Park connects it to colonial England, and places it in several contexts; a local context as the main downtown square and a global context as a member of a worldwide "club" of Victoria Parks. Similarly, the architecture that surrounds the park is influenced by international styles and trends of the last 100 years, with often regional characteristics that allow the buildings to co-exist and form the spatial edge of the park. New works by Rachelle Viader Knowles and Don Gill explored Victoria Park today: as a concept and a place, juxtaposed with a history of Victoria Park and the buildings which rose around it. Rachelle Viader Knowles' work included a video installation/link-up with her niece in Victoria Park, Cardiff, Wales, and an intervention in Regina's Park. The words "Think of England" were inscribed on the ground cover. Don Gill created a photo-based "archive" of the neighbourhoods he traverses, in and around Victoria Park, including the buildings examined in the exhibition.

"Specifically for this exhibition, I have made two new works that connect Victoria Park in Regina with the Victoria Park in my home town of Cardiff in Wales…another colonized country/people. As an artist, much of the work I do explores communication and relationships between people and places. Within the context of the Regina Public Library, I wanted to make works that use words. The text 'Think of England', inserted into Victoria Park which sits in front of the Dunlop Art Gallery, is both political in its historical instruction to respect and consider a ‘motherland’ and a critique as a question posed to the reader – what do YOU think of England? It is also a personal question posed to and by myself as someone born there, unsure of how to address nationhood, national affiliation, a sense of longing and belonging to place, as someone who grew up English as a ‘foreigner’ in Wales and lives as a ‘foreigner’ here, both places where local languages were systematically suppressed through acts of attempted eradication by the English."

Description:

A form reminiscent of a dyke remnant rests on the grassy plane. On one side, deposits of text and images are left on the wall, almost like watermarks from the recession of high water held back by the form in the past. The phrases and images recall multicultural and multigenerational memories from residents related to their past experiences with Surrey’s waterways. On the other side, a vibrant growing garden reveals the fertility of Surrey’s land that has resulted.

The tree emitted a sound score by Andrew Zealley, while Chrysanne Stathacos wrapped its trunk with silver strings and silver papers. Visitors were invited to attach printed 'wishes', available at the site, to its branches.

Benner’s garden was one of those that Harbourfront Centre chose to keep in place for more than a single year. This allowed the addition, two years after the initial installation, of a 4’ x 4’ b/w photo mural, originally used in American Cloisonné (1987-1988).

Description:

Third Garden is designed as a monument to local memory. This garden refers to the past use of the surrounding grounds as a healing site for psychiatric care, and to current day use as regenerated land, some of which has become a rehabilitated nature reserve. The installation integrates landscape design with sculptural elements to convey playful associations with psychiatric care (i.e. the couch and the serpent) and with the specific history of the site. The text in the pavers is based on oral and recorded histories of the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital, rewritten in the tone of intimate journal entries from the point of view of patients, relatives, staff and local residents.

You should see our sea of cabbages!

June 30, 1932

Went out with the other patients to cut and rake the grass, pick strawberries form the garden between the Assembly Hall and the Nurses’ Residence. Got a good workout. Came in good and hungry. Tired. West straight to bed after our meal.

October 11, 1958

The gardens have been taken away from us. We can’t work in them anymore. Something about cheap labour.

December 3, 1959

We went to see him today. We sat in the car afterwards. My daughter said, ‘That’s my brother’ and I said, ‘That’s my son.’ It was a very sad time.

September 1, 1979

They’re closing the hospital soon. They loaded us up this morning. We’re being taken to a place we don’t know. Some cried.

There is something revelational about walking daily in a familiar place.

The text simulates quotes. However, it is a fiction narrative, based on or rather inspired by historical documents and oral history of the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital.

The installation of this artwork was part of renovations of historic buildings and landscaping redevelopment in the city of Toronto.

Description:

The work is shaped like a sundial. A pink granite monolith featuring an engraved sentence is installed in the middle of a public place. An angled pole is held by a stem (the projected shadow follows the movements of the sun). Rectangular stones are arranged horizontally on the ground, marking the last hours of the day.
