Description:

Convex, mirrored acrylic domes lay on a concrete wall spanning four stories and spelling out a "Snellen eye chart"—that familiar series of letters that many of us recognize from routine eye exams—as enormous braille letters. It is an "eye chart for the blind". A plaque next to the sculpture explains in braille the concept behind the work.

Double Blind is a large-scale sculptural installation commissioned for the atrium of the new Vancouver Community College’s Broadway Campus building. Double Blind is accompanied by a T-shirt that is available at the VCC Broadway Campus Bookstore. The T-shirt echoes the installation’s oxymoronic premise: those who can see the work likely don’t read braille, and those who read braille probably cannot see the work. Double Blind was created as part of the City of Vancouver’s Public Art Program.

Description:

On the ground floor, round and square pictorial artworks as well as a few birds constitute the signage to the next floors.

Level 1:

The square shape represents the idea of home. Pictorial works show luminous clouds, an ethereal sky, reflections on water or the sea. Aluminium squares featuring an engraved poem are also inlcuded and a pictorial work runs along a glass box that houses a bird's nest.

Level 2:

Round paintings and aluminium circles featuring an engraved poem run along the corridors.

Description:

The artwork deploys over the sloping wall of the two floors dominating the main entrance hall. The work consists of a large, textured mural that was built with mirror-polished stainless steel cut-outs. It features black imprints on the metal parts as well as on the white back wall. Letters are hinted at throughout the work. Musical writings from various eras are superimposed onto this montage and shaped graphically into discs.

This mirror-artwork embraces its entire surroundings, offering a sensory experience of the architectural features that lets everyone choose their point of view. Reflections and plays on perception give the impression that the space increases tenfold. Description:

A totem pole is topped by a leafy cabin in which a hare may be living. The artwork is made up of four components: a totem pole, a cabin, a tortoise and a hare. Each element carries its own story. The totem pole connects heaven and earth. The cabin, like a treehouse, is the perfect hiding place for any child. A strong and patient tortoise inhabits this place along with a nervous hare who is always ready to jump around. The names of 600 children who have been treated in this pavilion are engraved on the totem pole.

Description:

Brilliantly-colored figural pieces are interspersed with abstract components depicting the activities that take place in the recreation facility. Calligraphic marks and stripes are integrated into the panels, lending a spontaneous gestural quality to the work. The piece as a whole is meant to reflect the note of celebration felt throughout the building, as well as the excitement, anticipation and intense focus found there.

Description:

This pyramid-shaped sculpture is a testimony to creativity. Acting like a signal, the chosen colour, red, and the luminous area, in the center, attracts attention. Stable and solid, the square-shaped pedestal balances out the mysterious effect produced by the luminous shimmer inside the piece. Inside the pyramid, the artist put in artificial suspension words related to the main values attributed to the work environment, i.e. human beings and economics. Fifty-something such values are thus kept captive under the pyramid, along with a powerful laser that illuminates each piece of suspended mica on which one of the values has been written.

Description:

Sculptural installation looking like a huge filing cabinet with a cover and 64 drawers that can opened, based on the Yi-King. Divided into two numerically equivalent series and installed over eight rows, the drawers hold groups of objects that represent the 64 hexagrams of the Book of Transformations, each identified by its name and each contained in a small linden box protected by tempered glass. The eight rows evoke geological strata - rocks, fossils, bones, algae and seashells roots and moss, seeds and barks, flowers and other "human" artefacts. A chameleon-like iris and the three horsetail stems have been modelled in the rond and leave the cover partly open.

Description:

Finger-painted text in a stairwell. On the public side of the stairwell, there is a finger-painted text used in exorcisms and three periscopes placed in the toilets contain a censored religious image. On the private side of the stairwell, there is a miniature altar, which features a tabernacle containing moose hair, and 12 cases presented in the manner of a reliquary.

Mural painted on a concrete wall and a triptych consisting of a painting with bas-reliefs. The mural consists of horizontal rectangles, blue wavy forms and stylized fishes that swim along the wall. The central painting of the triptych is a thin horizontal rectangle and represents similar fishes on a blue background. The two bas-reliefs are larger than the painting and represent children next to a river, which overflows on both sides of the central painting.

Description:

The installation consists of paintings on wooden panels and a metallic structure. The paintings cover the upper part of four of the library's columns. They evoke the elements of nature - water, air, earth and fire - as well as various elements of the Pointe-du-Lac landscape (contours of the banks, flight of migrating birds). Text excerpts were pasted to the transparent strata of different paintings. They refer to a combination of natural elements and fields of knowledge, as chosen by the artist - fire/applied science; water/imagination and fiction; earth/practical knowledge; air/spirituality. A green steel structure is anchored between two columns, representing a cantilever bridge.

Description:

The work consists of three panels. The central panel represents an arched bridge with three turtles crossing it. Under it, the tail of a fish or sea mammal can be seen. This tail rises out of an oval aluminium plate that evokes water. Part of the animal's fin is also made of aluminium. The two extremities of the arched bridge are presented on two smaller panels, which hang one facing the other on the side walls that frame the central panel. The text is written on the wall plate.

Description:

The work consists of six juxtaposed relief paintings. They show the schematic representations of a man and a woman whose silhouettes evoke those of two birds. The composition is divided and framed by a wooden construction.

Description:

The work consists of four paintings. In the lobby, three paintings display wheelbarrows made of aluminium or that have been painted in bright colours (red, yellow, orange, blue). Boats are pouring out of the wheelbarrows. The painting in the dining room features twelve aligned "wheelbarrow-boats," in the middle of which appears a larger wheelbarrow, shown in profile. The upper part of this larger wheelbarrow spills out of the canvas. Text is written on a wall plate.

C'est de la terre et de la mer que l'homme récolte l'ensemble de sa nourriture. Depuis la nuit des temps, la brouette et la barque sont donc pour lui des instruments élémentaires d'approvisionnement. Elles sont à la fois véhicules et contenants. Et grâce à leur mobilité et capacité de charge, elles prolongent en quelque sorte les possibilités de l'homme. La barque et la brouette sont représentées ici à des échelles variées comme autant de contenants de mesure qui se transvident l'un dans l'autre, mélange, dosage, pressage, combinaison. L'homme par son habileté à les utiliser atteindra l'équilibre, cette notion indissociable des arts de la table.
