Description:

The artist offered an itinerary in the gallery and outside.

The MAI's eight windows were blocked up to present text fragments in fluorescent lettering.

Posters announcing lost cats were distributed on walls and lampposts throughout the surrounding streets. The poster was touched up by the artist, though he took care of preserving all the information.

On the other side of the large windows, the MAI's exhibition hall was plunged in darkness. Four stations were indicated on the ground. A soundtrack and projection were associated with each one.

Galerie du MAI gave carte blanche to Michael Fernandes, a Canadian artist known for his artwork and his ecclectic body of work. During an artist residency in Montreal, he shot short video, almost too simple little stories. One potato, two potato... is a game, a random game, but it is also a change of roles, a turn of events. This artwork traces a quest for identity in tongue-in-cheek style.

For the play / pause / repeat exhibition, Woodcock created a series of three new works: Location Shoot (2003), A favorite film for each letter of the alphabet / A favorite film from each year since my birth (2003) and Wish You Were Here³ (2003).

Note(s):

One day, in October 2003 in Toronto, at the request of Laurel Woodcock, the Adler Aviation Company flew a plane pulling a banner on which the sentence "WISH YOU WERE HERE" was written.

On January 15, 2004, in Guelph, the event was repeated for thirty minutes at the opening of the artist's exhibition at the Macdonald Stewart Art Center.

The three videos presented were Location shoot, A favorite film from each letter of the alphabet / a favorite film from each year since my birth and a document about the flight with the banner (3:30 min).

"The phrase is familiar as that abused by generations of souvenir postcards. Once meant as a wholehearted invocation to the friend or family member who could not travel along to an exotic location, it has become hollow and empty, often used with sardonic intent."

Walkthrough is a preproduction term in the film industry for rehearsal where performers speak their lines, practice cues and movements, but no shooting occurs. As part of the residency at The Banff Centre for the Arts, I have transcribed excerpts of direction from film scripts into metallic silver vinyl lettering, using the standard font and formatting from the scriptwriting software "Final Draft." These cinematic instructions for everyday gestures and vernacular dialogue have been placed in locations where the texts suggest the actions of passersby in those sites.

Ivan Jurakic installed two lines of prosaic text onto the entrance way to the gallery: "Looking, one may never find/Wanting, one may never know". His piece, entitled Spell, examines the idea of a quest or search, particularly relevant to the person’s reason for entering the gallery/library space. His work suggests entering as an act of faith that one should come to with an open mind. While inside the space, one may discover things that were unlooked for or unexpected but invaluable.

Description:

Passages translates "Never work", a slogan attributed to the Situationist International, into 18 different languages. Original handwritten translations were solicited from fellow artists and colleagues who were either first generation Canadian or from immigrant backgrounds. The translations often required participants to ask assistance from a parent or close relative. The signatures were digitally processed and lasercut in white signage vinyl and mounted outdoors onto the many windows and glass barriers of the second and third levels of the Kitchener City Hall. These signatures marked the site with a form of aesthetic graffiti that suggested freeform cultural discourse and social drift.

Passage featured an excerpt from the essay Ecstasy and Inertia by philosopher Jean Baudrillard. Beginning with a negation (no), the text created a metaphoric circuit by ending with a preposition suggesting contact and location (on). Functioning as a memorial to the post-industrial space where the phrase was contained – a gutted commercial site transformed into a temporary art gallery – the inscription also alluded to the terminal nature of commerce. The installation proposed a kind of formalist vandalism, akin to carving ones name into a public bench. Set behind a glass façade, Passage was visible 24 hours a day, taking its place alongside the flood of other signage and graffiti that marks the city as a place of passage.

Description:

Fine blue roots are painted onto a surface composed of twelve wooden boxes that have been dyed white. The central element, located in the foreground, is divided into three parts. On the bottom, handwritten texts, dating from 1903 and found in pharmaceutical archives, are engraved onto each other on a steel surface that has been finished with a patina. The central part is backlit and displays a digital print of roots. The top part represents a tree trunk.
