As part of the residency at The Banff Centre for the Arts, I have transcribed excerpts of direction from film scripts into metallic silver vinyl lettering, using the standard font and formatting from the scriptwriting software "Final Draft." His piece, entitled <em>Spell,</em>&nbsp;examines the idea of a quest or search, particularly relevant to the person’s reason for entering the gallery/library space. His work suggests entering as an act of faith that one should come to with an open mind. Original handwritten translations were solicited from fellow artists and colleagues who were either first generation Canadian or from immigrant backgrounds. The translations often required participants to ask assistance from a parent or close relative. The signatures were digitally processed and lasercut in white signage vinyl and mounted outdoors onto the many windows and glass barriers of the second and third levels of the Kitchener City Hall. Functioning as a memorial to the post-industrial space where the phrase was contained – a gutted commercial site transformed into a temporary art gallery – the inscription also alluded to the terminal nature of commerce. The installation proposed a kind of formalist vandalism, akin to carving ones name into a public bench.
