Description:

"Right to the City" involves three elements:

1) Ten resin capsules imbedded in the ground along the pathway at Nanaimo and 41^stAvenue. The capsules contain paraphernalia that might be found in someone's purse or pocket.

2) Six metal door and window frames placed in a rectangle to evoke the structure of a house. The doors and windows are made of HSS tubular steel, painted white. The frames also have plates with possessive pronouns cut out of them: ours, yours, his, hers, mine, theirs.

3) Two weathervanes located on the Southeast and Northwest corners of Clarendon and 45^thAvenue. They are comprised of a bearing assembly, a shaft and a rectangular sign that turns in the wind with the words "yours" and "ours" cut out.

"Before this tract of land became part of the Ridgeway, there was a simple beaten path crossing the space. We see this aspect of our project as a ghost-like trace of an ephemeral, unplanned path - memorializing something that is so much a part of everyday life that it almost escapes notice…" "We have marked out this path with ten clear resin capsules with objects cast into them. The objects are things you would normally carry in your pockets: notes, bus tickets, loose change, etc." About the door and window frames: Our intention is to raise questions around ideas of ownership of and entitlement to the city: whose city? Do we feel the city belongs to us because it is 'public'? Or do we think of entitlement in terms of private property: what we own or don't own?" Regarding the weathervanes: "The turning of the signs in the wind functions as metaphor for shifting notions of community, place, and a sense of entitlement we feel as citizens." "The title "Right to the City" comes from the urban theorist Henri Lefebvre's text by the same name which calls for a different envisioning of the city: for it to be organized for, and belong to, its inhabitants, rather than organized for profit. The elements in this project explore the contradictions and ambiguities of public and private space. Although we can identify in general with Vancouver as 'our city', as belonging to the public, space in the city is clearly delineated: either it belong to you or id doesn't. The space along Nanaimo is technically public space, and unlike the neighbouring yards, anyone can go on this space. However, in the larger scheme of things, do we feel entitled to it as a space? We're interested in drawing attention to the public nature of this space and the claims made on the city. Related to these ideas, this artwork addresses the ephemeral, shifting nature of the site, both in terms of the physical environment and cultural priorities. This area was once a vacant lot and is now a small park. We hope the work will open up a space for contemplation and reconsideration on the meaning of these transitions. This is a chance to look at the neighbourhood in another way, and by extension, the city."

"Playing with the idea of draft work taking shape, coming to life and materializing, the proposed work, À PEINE VIENT-ELLE DE NAÎTRE…, takes hold of the installation space as if it were taking flight. First on the wall – as two-dimensional space - the elements composing the work come forth and tell their tale. Further away, the few sentences seem to get away from this white surface to conquer the space facing it, thus becoming three-dimensional.

Five sentences, seemingly handwritten, run up the wall, cling to it, leave it and fly away. Text becomes material pretext and the letters that shape it are nothing more than a trace that spins in space, evoking suspended matter. Five sentences are repeated over and over, one after the other, spinning into a core, a unit, an image of creation. Five simple sentences. Five sentences that tell the story of creation."

History:

As a production and research space, Atelier Silex is a place that promotes the idea of free contemporary artistic creation, that benefits from sustained support. Not only devoted to sculpture anymore, in the traditional sense, Atelier Silex has become a space that is receptive to a form of blooming creativity, one that goes well beyond this discipline. By allowing for invention and artistic encounters, in a context where imagination explodes and expands, Atelier Silex has become a place of pure creation.

Creation is thus at the heart of this project, whether in terms of the action required to put it together or to organize a thing that did not exist before or simply of the intention that precedes action, the story that is told here reveals the premises of an emerging creation."

The city of Port-Cartier, in the MRC des Sept-Rivières, is located along the North Shore of the St. Lawrence River and is characterized mainly by the immensity of the land and shores and by its abundance of natural resources. The Centre de santé des Sept Rivières includes a CLSC and a small medical centre that houses a long-term care facility.

The Work:

The coastal horizon stretches along the entire North Shore. Agnès Riverin chose to illustrate it in four ways, which can be found in the Centre de santé’s Place Publique (lobby) and its dining room.

Description:

The Wreck:

Fascinated by the mysterious wreck of the Lady Era, which washed up on the shores of Port-Cartier over 20 years ago, the artist made it the focal point of this work. Thus, a steel silhouette of the wreck floats on the wall of the Place publique (lobby). Jutting out slightly, it hugs the curve of the wall. Corten steel, used in this project, has been oxidized without affecting its resistance. Its rich colours will intensify with time, just like those of the Lady Era.

The Boxes:

Facing the wall featuring the wreck, the small wall of the Place publique provided another opportunity to explore dreams and memories. A horizontal line made up of six cherry wood boxes with glass panels (40 x 40 x 15cm) separates the Place publique from the nurses’ station. Each box, featuring a glass panel on both sides, features a porthole printed in transparency on the interior panels, revealing its contents.

Three of these boxes contain historic elements referring to forestry (pulp and paper, lumber), the mining industry (iron minerals) and fisheries. The three others integrate old photos of three of the centre’s first residents, commemorating their passage in the institution. These men and women, seen in transparency, symbolize the process of Alzheimer’s disease: long-term memory, first seen as a ghostly presence, slowly overtakes short-term memory. A poetic text written by the artist can be read on both sides, linking the boxes together. The poem takes viewer-readers on a morning stroll by the sea to watch the sunrise.

Dining Room:

In the dining room, two series of portholes are hung across from each other; diners are seated aboard a virtual ship.

Six Pictorial Works:

On the first wall, measuring 9.75m, there are six paintings, each measuring 60cm in width. They represent six different views of the sea-river: from the beach, the harbour, the sea and the road. Painted in oil with large strokes, the chiaroscuro contrast highlights the play of light upon the water or the close-up of a wave.

Six Sculptural Works:

On the 7.75m wall near the windows, six sculpted wood pieces measuring 60cm each cast their shadows. The maritime theme is maintained. Close-ups of waves and the movement of the water are sculpted in linden wood and call to mind the forestry industry in Port-Cartier. They are the same size as the oil paintings and are hung at the same height on the wall; they evoke both the horizon and a series of portholes on the hull of a ship.

The artist’s mandate was to create a calming work of art aimed at older people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease while including elements of the region’s three main economic areas, i.e. the former pulp and paper mill, the iron mine and fishing.

Working together with the families of the victims, it was agreed to engrave the victims’ names along with quotations that their loved ones felt captured the essence of their lives.

Artwork theme:

This site-specific installation was dedicated to the memories of Professors Matthew Douglass, Michael Hogben, Aaron Saber and Phoivos Ziogas who were killed in the Fabrikant Shooting in the building, on August 24, 1992.

The use of stone, metal, light and greenery in various juxtapositions sharply penetrates the public space yet invites interaction and assembly. Students who congregate and study in this area become part of a living memorial.

A bridge spans a small pond and stream, becoming a metaphor for connections with the past and future and reflecting on the life cycle of the salmon and the remarkable journey they endure. Inspired by and incorporating railway tracks and ties, the bridge floor has multiple bronze phrases relating to salmon, fishing and hatcheries inlaid into the wooden floor.

The first artwork to be completed under the auspices of the City of Winnipeg’s public art policy, established in 2004.
The competition took place in the fall of 2004.
Created specifically for the Millennium Library in Winnipeg, which underwent an extensive renovation during 2004-2005.
A seven-foot-high version was shown at the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art in 2007.
Versions small enough to fit in the palm of the hand also exist.

Description:

Built around the presence of an architectural element embedded in the middle of a series of windows, the artwork represents the deployment of a tree. The tree spreads out horizontally into seven sections that occupy the upper windows. Two sheets of glass enclose letter-shaped cookie cutters that are distributed randomly.

Note(s):

Simulating the action of entering into what the artist calls "a path bordered by the world of possibilities", the twelve columns are arranged randomly and gradually reveal their hidden sides as well as a variety of materials, textures and colours.
This installation suggests that this is a space where people, users of the site, are transported to the heart of a world of possibilities. At once shrine and imaginary forest, the artwork unfolds in space, inviting visitors to wander through the various worlds being expressed.

Description:

A totem pole is topped by a leafy cabin in which a hare may be living. The artwork is made up of four components: a totem pole, a cabin, a tortoise and a hare. Each element carries its own story. The totem pole connects heaven and earth. The cabin, like a treehouse, is the perfect hiding place for any child. A strong and patient tortoise inhabits this place along with a nervous hare who is always ready to jump around. The names of 600 children who have been treated in this pavilion are engraved on the totem pole.

Description:

The artwork is located at the apex of the library's main traffic area. It reveals a dandelion head on which was superimposed a reconstituted map of old Charlesbourg in different eras.

The number 21 (for 21 degrees) is the extension of a blue neon line and indicates the cutting angle of the original subdivision's institutional core.

The cumulative traces of human activity stamped on Charlesbourg's urban landscape. The plant-life theme recalls the greenery on the roof and the flight of the dandelion seeds in all directions expresses the dissemination of knowledge, an appropriate symbol for an intellectual and cultural source such as the Charlesbourg library.

Description:

A single, twisted column of used books occupies the main stairwell of the Chelsea municipal library. Six meters in height, this column reaches from the ground floor to the ceiling of the second floor. The illusion of balance is achieved by threading 400 books onto a steel pipe.
