Description:

Engraved images carved into bluestone suggest fragments of a magnificent tree, shadows of the Tree of Knowledge. Dappled amongst the imagery are literary quotes personally selected by library donors. Each piece contributes to the whole, while remaining individual.

The art project consists of two parts: large pavers cut from pillars featuring text and placed at various locations throughout the park; a centre piece of large etched black stone paver slabs placed in a radial pattern incorporating the drawings of horticultural images.

What can you see from your poplar tree,

A Fraser River ebbing high, whose
banks yearn for your feet?

Where is it you are looking,
from your branches up above
the fish ponds that your Father built
and the sleeping Holland bulbs?

the East where you are still a child
with pockets filled with time?

where trees are always in bloom -
the South that fills your lungs with love

the one I can’t yet imagine

Paulik Gardens Neighbourhood Park was formerly the home of two families and contained the large ornamental gardens, woodlot, blueberry farm and bog of the Paulik family, and the Lulu Island Water Gardens of the Ohler family. Today, traces of the water gardens can still be seen, and the former Paulik property is a lush, expansive garden.

The painted traffic box is part of an HRM-wide project. Poet Matthew Robinson was contacted by Heather MacLeod, who works for the city’s Community Relations & Cultural Affairs department, to work on a site-specific poem for Grand Parade.

"From that point on I started to do a little research on the Grand Parade—after Heather explained the particular traffic box that she had in mind—and eventually came up with the poem we ended up using,” says Robinson. He says the poem isn’t exactly commemorative, but “something that was accessible and interesting; something that would be rather easily associated with the city and its people. I hope the poem does that in a reasonable way."

Description:

Colossal fountain. The text is written on its perimeter. The fountain represents tectonic plates that have been disrupted by the effects of water. It is an analogy to how natural elements are raised and thrown in the air by the power of water which, once harnessed and controlled, became essential to the transformation of the province of Quebec. Lighting and sound design reinforce the impression of disruption of the earth's crust, complementing the work.

A bridge spans a small pond and stream, becoming a metaphor for connections with the past and future and reflecting on the life cycle of the salmon and the remarkable journey they endure. Inspired by and incorporating railway tracks and ties, the bridge floor has multiple bronze phrases relating to salmon, fishing and hatcheries inlaid into the wooden floor.

A series of connecting high and low pools, with a waterfall made of overlapping black slate. A large glacial boulder sits in the upper pool and an identical cast bronze replica sits in the lower pool. Inscription cast in concrete beside the waterfall.

Description:

Arrows painted on a rocky outcrop in the centre of town point us toward the top of the cape, from where we discover a cityscape dominated by mining facilities. Made up of foreign-sounding names, these arrows recall the many immigrants who came to seek their fortune in this gold-rich region and wound up working in the mines. On the ground, at the top of the cape, we find a ring composed of words written with rocks.

Description:

In the sculpture, an older man contemplates the draught of a document quietly; beside him kneels the small figure of himself at the age of seven. At that time, he lived in Hampton and, all through his life, remembered it fondly, even choosing to be buried here.

The semi circular ash benches that the carved figure sits on symbolize the United Nations. To invoke the essence of the Declaration as a lasting monument for all peoples, we chose two large sandstone monoliths. Upright and powerful, they stand for strength and longevity. One is carved with some of the articles of the Declaration and the other is a fountain, its water symbolizing the movement of time and creating a sense of quiet and peace

Description:

Lance Belanger and Kitty Mykka have made a deceptively simple piece that divides the path into two branches by laying out a line of stones in the middle. The 'art path' they have created has three sections, one with the stone broken into fist-sized pieces, a second of smooth stone cut lengthwise, and a third of jute bags filled with small stone pieces.

“The three-dimensional design of my sculpture refers to the cylindrical form evident in almost every aspect of the printing process: the myriad rollers in the printing presses, the curled lead linotypes, the towering paper rolls. The form is vertical and conical referring to both the garden trees and the city poster pillars used to announce events. The medium is green granite, making reference to the pulp and paper industry, which uses granite as the supporting core for the enormous paper rolls. Authentic Journal headlines from the last 100 years, embossed like the first elevator doors of the Journal Building, spiral up and around the granite. In my original design, the headlines would emphasize our response to events in the world; exhilaration, horror, pride, insight. In the process of production, the Journal decided to dedicate the headlines to notable events specific to the history of the city.” Darci Mallon, June 23, 2004

This work combines a simplified image of the Ottawa area landscape, as seen from a satellite, with a drawing of a surveyor's sextant over the city, which partly obscures the word "domicile" so that it reads as "docile".

Note(s):

The stone is set into the pavement so that the map is oriented to the geomagnetic North. The image offers numerous puns on the idea of place. This artwork could be said to be in the present tense in terms of how we understand or define topography today as opposed to other artwork on the mall which borrows a surveyor's narrative that is almost 200 years old and primarily concerned with a warm place to sleep and drink. One work is about being there; another is about a more indirect experience.
