Description:

A planisphere is cast on the ground at the entrance of the school. This map of Earth is coupled with excerpts from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. A block of letters is embedded in the wall. At first, it looks like an abstract mosaic but then words reveal themselves in the manner of a crisscross word puzzle.

Note(s):

The Earth map was inspired by a map drawn by Buckminster Fuller in 1927. It presents an uninterrupted view of Earth.

The mural is made of stones from different regions of the globe. The ensemble as a whole evokes a crisscross word puzzle. It contains fifteen decipherable words, written in every direction. The words are trades that children still practice today somewhere in the world.

Description:

The work is integrated into the floor of the great hall, which opens up onto five floors topped by a sky dome. The ensemble features a cross made of freshwater limestone, which recalls the cross on the ceiling. The names of famous humour pioneers are engraved on the ground over two aisles featuring sixteen black granite slabs. Four of the slabs feature inlaid pictograms in white marble. These represent costumes associated with the represented characters, i.e. Aristophanes, Rabelais, Molière and Oscar Wilde. Four other slabs appear in the shape of coffins.

Description:

Sculptural and environmental installation featuring a floor mosaic, a suspended sculpture and a high relief affixed to the ceiling of the rotunda. First, a polychromic mosaic on the ground represents a gridded map of the world, where continents are shown as aquatic masses and the oceans as continents. Second, brass words are inlaid into the mosaic - Pacifica, Atlantica, Indica, Arctica. Third, suspended to the ceiling, a mirror crescent moon reflects the image of the Earth and hides a globe in its upper section. Last, a star protruding from the rotunda completes the composition.

Description:

A concrete wall features a series of drawers like those used in archival filing. A square plate seems to jump out of one of the drawers. Numbers 1 to 16 appear on it. A grille is superimposed onto this plate, evoking the graphic marker used by printers to make printed characters legible. The shadows created by the numbers move on the wall according to the time of day, in the way of a sundial. A stainless steel alphabet is laid out on the rear of the wall. An anvil is balanced on top, integrating a brass frame.

Description:

Sculptural installation consisting of nine wall ornaments decorating the walls of a stairwell. A circular panel is placed on a wall pierced with nine small square windows. Above the first row of windows, the sentence "Me voici terre magnifique je suis une nouvelle planète" is painted in pale grey letters. Eight other rectangular panels are arranged in equal numbers on either side of the stairwell. Six panels are made of dark granite and marble plates. These are installed vertically or diagonally. Two other smaller panels are arranged horizontally.

Text theme:

The text evokes excerpts from conversations overheard by the artist or his poetic reflections on everyday life as well as the historical aspect of a building. The text often transposes observations that belong to the private world into public space.

Artwork theme:

The artwork's sentences relate to a more personal, intimate world and to everyday life, rather than to historical events and issues of public interest. They recount trivial stories, evoke fugitive thoughts as well as bits of conversations heard by accident, which were then reorganized into seemingly illogical series. Visitors create their own links between the images that these fragments can trigger, resulting in an exchange, a mutual confidence. These works pay tribute to the ordinary, familiar experience that connects people.

History

History:

Three plates no longer exist. The plate located at the corner of Laurier and Jeanne-Mance was destroyed during renovations. The plate located at the corner of Richardson and Shearer Streets has been destroyed by employees of the City of Montreal who did not know it was a work of art.The other plate that is missing is the one that stood at the corner of Cherrier and Saint-Hubert streets
The exhibition Promenades, l'art dans la ville aims to bring the public to discover works that occupy public space, outside, works that the public has an opportunity to pass by regularly without really knowing who is hiding behind.
