"I created a series of projects, interventions, and publications designed to fit specifically with the structure of the conference. The Airport Pick-Ups volunteers formed a welcoming committee. This team picked up out-of-towners at the airport holding a banner that read 'WE ARE HERE FOR YOU' and drove them to their host’s home. This same team also drove the participants back to the airport to catch their departing flights, as well as provided a shuttle service to and from the university during the conference."

Description:

The tapestry is conceived in two sections. The smaller panel functions as an introduction, somewhat like a decorative title page. The outer border pattern is ornate and lyrical, surrounding an interior field. A chant-like sequence of words is woven across the pattern of the interior field, representing a more physical, less romantic aspect of the senses. The large panel is dominated by five images that allude to the five senses.

My hope is that the images will resonate differently for each viewer and that they will suggest the interconnection between the senses and how we experience them. I have contrasted the richness of the five symbols and surrounding area with a stark black, white and grey frieze of visceral images of the human body and its interior workings. These images are ordered and coded like specimens for study, referencing the impulse to analyze, understand and control all aspects of the human experience and sensuality.

Description:

A single, twisted column of used books occupies the main stairwell of the Chelsea municipal library. Six meters in height, this column reaches from the ground floor to the ceiling of the second floor. The illusion of balance is achieved by threading 400 books onto a steel pipe.

Eliza approached the gangplank,
the last in the queue of women, some with child
some without. Parcels and bundles were carried
from a blue ship by new immigrants from England
to Canada just after World War I. Right from the
beginning Eliza sent parcels back home. But as the
Depression reduced her prairie town, the large
parcels became smaller. She developed the skill of
concise packaging: Compressing volume, increasing the
‘necessities’, and fabricating space by innovative,
even artful doublings-up. Only after sending dozens
of these small parcels did she make the connexion:
While cinching the string, tying the same handles
that circle their shoulders, she realized that the
cardboard box was the same size and shape as the
boxes which held gas masks carried daily by her
mother, her sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends,
the same folks who were receiving her parcels.

She sent clothing and
linens and saucepans to
replace Saucepans for Victory
and she sent food to offset the
ration which lasted from 1940
to 1953. Some of these items were
easy, such as nuts and candied fruit
for Christmas cake. Others, the more
fragile, the more volatile, required some
tricky packing. She filled empty baking
powder tins with melted lard. Holding
fresh eggs gently between thumb and
fingertips, she released them into the
warm fat where they nestled against
the side of the tin, making a single
point of contact with the lonesome
shells of their neighbours. Later,
the congealed fat would conceal
and protect the passengers.
Only the most discerning
eye could detect the
slightest bulge
in the sides
of the card-
board tin.

She knew the sequence.
How long it took to prepare
and wrap. To write the linen
address label India ink and sew on
the burlap with the long and crooked
needle given her by her mother. The after-
noon journey to the post office, winding the
ring which circles her finger with rosy gold.
She wonders – will the parcel ever arrive?
The question hung inside her. The men
behind the wickets, anticipating her
monthly visits, didn’t seem to care
what was in the parcel. Instead,
they looked to see what she
had painted onto
the burlap.

Eliza’s trunk
had been wrapped in
loose sackcloth during her
long sea voyage. For the first
years she had wrapped the parcels
home with pieces of this coarse sacking
which had little blue Liner insignia stamped
across the surface. Forced to acknowledge the
inevitable end of her resources, she imagined
painting little blue ships onto the burlap
parcels, then painted bigger blue ships,
then turbulent imaginary coastlines.
She painted after the final wrapping,
using the crossing string as lines of
latitude and longitude, so that
readers turned the parcel
round several times
in order to try
and situate
themselves.

I imagined a dialogue between the trees and passersby. The text was wrapped around the trees with ribbons, textiles and common art crafts elements as a way to invite the viewer into the conversation. I used ten different texts in twelve installations, and exhibited them for ten days on Edmonton streets, I had five to take back home. I constructed the work in such a way to emphasize that, although the work was installed in an unstructured environment, I did not see the work as disposable. The final product was intended to underline the serious and considered process from which I chose the texts and their placement.

"The text became of greater importance, reflecting a subtle and somewhat ironic tone for the project. I realize that this project comes very close to the line of 'writer' but I must emphasize that I strongly see my work as a visual product, the material and placement in the urban landscape is crucial to understanding my motivation. Placing these works in the streets, inviting the passerby to become an incidental viewer strongly colors the text."

Each morning between November 12 and December 14, 2007, Hall woke to greet the day with a wish/prayer inscribed on a small strip of linen, which she then hung outdoors on a small tree near her house in St. John's, Newfoundland. A daily practice intended to mark the change between fall and winter, it reminded her to begin each day mindfully and with full attention. When the process was complete, she brought the rags indoors and made them into a small house... a humble but hopeful structure that may be the first of many to follow.

In the summer of 1969, just months after it was installed at McGill Metro Station, the work was targeted by vandals. The tapestry was removed from the station to be cleaned but, because there was a dispute between the donor of the work and the Montreal Metro organization, it was never returned. The City of Montreal finally surrendered it to McGill University in 1972.

Artefact 2004 – sculptures urbaines is a group of thirteen artists, which includes Monique Bertrand, Martin Boisseau, Ani Deschênes, Doyon-Rivest, André Du Bois, Lucie Duval, Raymond Gervais, Michel Goulet, Neva-Gotthilf, Daniel Olson, Yannick Pouliot, Alan Storey and Louise Viger. Their artworks were installed along Chemin Olmsted, between the Centre de la montagne — near the site of the 1964 symposium — and the big chalet at the lookout. Some works were imposing, others were more discreet but all were presented as imaginary places likely to appeal to visitors.

Description:

Large panels feature various texts. The art work consists of three installations and evokes an encounter. The first installation that appeals to the traveller consists of three rectangular pieces of cotton that hang respectfully from surrounding trees. The second installation consists of a flat, heart-shaped stone covered with moss and dry leaves, and surrounded by hundreds of smaller gray stones. In the final installation, a short text invites the traveller inside the structure to lay down a stone softly and choose a gift.

Inipi est la "sweat lodge" ou loge à transpirer, le rite le plus ancien des Natifs d'Amérique, commun à toutes les tribus. En langue lakota, inipi signifie "naître encore" : dans l'inipi, enveloppé par la vapeur purificatrice du rite, l'individu renaît à une conscience nouvelle, à une lucidité nouvelle quant à son rôle et à son destin.
