Created by assembling hundreds of glass jars, the installation Vers tissés serré sends visitors on a poetic journey through Montreal, with help from words by Gaston Miron, Pierre Nepveu, Jacques Brault, Claude Beausoleil, Hélène Monette, Stéphane D’Amours, Paul Chamberland, Fulvio Caccia, Michel Beaulieu, Nicole Brossard, France Théoret and Danny Plourde. Each element distinguishes itself through the poetry it displays.

History:

From May 18 to October 31, 2010, in the entrance hall of the Grande Bibliothèque, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) will be hosting the exhibition Architectures en vers, which consists of five architectural installations inspired by poetry. These installations were created by collectives of well-known and up-and-coming architects working with glass artists. The exhibition is presented as part of the “Montréal, 2010 City of Glass” program, under the direction of the Board of Montreal Museum Directors.

Description:

An urban intervention project which comprises some 125 words* written in an ephemeral manner on the sidewalk, along with dates - lost words (1900-2000), new words (1900-2000) and invented words (2010). New words are in black; lost words, in white; and invented words, in pink.

* The dates represent the year in which each word appeared in a dictionary or disappeared from it (the dictionary being, as it changed name throughout the century, the Petit Larousse illustré, the Nouveau Petit Larousse illustré, the Petit Larousse and the Larousse illustré).

The artist divided the words into series: hunger, feet, capital, power, order and control, America, art, morals, lost floating, measurement.

Artwork theme:

The project uses city space as a space for collective thought about the words we use. The lines of the Quartier des Faubourgs's sidewalks become reading surfaces that flow to the rhythm of passers-by. The act of walking becomes a play on words, a constellation of ideas and of whimsical, critical, perhaps even cynical word associations.

Description:

A planisphere is cast on the ground at the entrance of the school. This map of Earth is coupled with excerpts from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. A block of letters is embedded in the wall. At first, it looks like an abstract mosaic but then words reveal themselves in the manner of a crisscross word puzzle.

The Earth map was inspired by a map drawn by Buckminster Fuller in 1927. It presents an uninterrupted view of Earth.

The mural is made of stones from different regions of the globe. The ensemble as a whole evokes a crisscross word puzzle. It contains fifteen decipherable words, written in every direction. The words are trades that children still practice today somewhere in the world.

Paulik Gardens Neighbourhood Park was formerly the home of two families and contained the large ornamental gardens, woodlot, blueberry farm and bog of the Paulik family, and the Lulu Island Water Gardens of the Ohler family. Today, traces of the water gardens can still be seen, and the former Paulik property is a lush, expansive garden.

Sitting proud and peaceful, this 16-foot-tall human figure is made up of characters from eight alphabets: Latin, Greek, Russian Cyrillic, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Arabic and Chinese. The sculpture is dramatically illuminated at night.

24 plates have been moulded into the gullies that are created by ground erosion (through the movements of pedestrians). The sentences on the plates are taken from conversations with the pedestrians.

This installation highlights our connection to erosion - that normal, everyday wear and tear that we inflict to the urban landscape. It testifies of these imperceptible transformations brought about over time because of erosion, and of the way passing time also transforms memories.

Project: Terrains d’entente is part of the "Supra Rural" residency program (14 projects from 1999 to 2002), which focused on movement to reveal an element of the urban experience.

Caroline Gagné is interested in urban landscape truisms and types, particularly the idea of erosion, whether it is linked to the environment, to everyday objects or to the connection we have to them.

She works on site-specific projects, either located in public places (a park, a familiar building) or refering to these places in the context of indoor exhibitions or Web projects. An observer of all those anonymous and banal gestures that ponctuate city life, Caroline explores the notions of fragility and absence through a delicate use of everyday materials and objects that may seem mundane but that were in fact chosen for their significant connection to the world.

A semi-circle of shattered glass screens with etched leaves is visible from the street and lit at night. In the courtyard is a 4,500 sq. ft. leaf-shaped pool; situated around it are black granite seats with a word carved into each like the title of a botanical drawing. The leaf pool is visible in it's entirety from the office suites above.

Inhale consists of 15 laminated and tempered glass panes and ceramic frit, treated with sandblast and acid etch. An intimate and ephemeral installation which sifts breath, site and story in translucent overlays. Two text layers distilled from experiential on-site recordings interplay with the etchings.

"Playing with the idea of draft work taking shape, coming to life and materializing, the proposed work, À PEINE VIENT-ELLE DE NAÎTRE…, takes hold of the installation space as if it were taking flight. First on the wall – as two-dimensional space - the elements composing the work come forth and tell their tale. Further away, the few sentences seem to get away from this white surface to conquer the space facing it, thus becoming three-dimensional.

Five sentences, seemingly handwritten, run up the wall, cling to it, leave it and fly away. Text becomes material pretext and the letters that shape it are nothing more than a trace that spins in space, evoking suspended matter. Five sentences are repeated over and over, one after the other, spinning into a core, a unit, an image of creation. Five simple sentences. Five sentences that tell the story of creation."

As a production and research space, Atelier Silex is a place that promotes the idea of free contemporary artistic creation, that benefits from sustained support. Not only devoted to sculpture anymore, in the traditional sense, Atelier Silex has become a space that is receptive to a form of blooming creativity, one that goes well beyond this discipline. By allowing for invention and artistic encounters, in a context where imagination explodes and expands, Atelier Silex has become a place of pure creation.

Creation is thus at the heart of this project, whether in terms of the action required to put it together or to organize a thing that did not exist before or simply of the intention that precedes action, the story that is told here reveals the premises of an emerging creation."

Description:

The project acts as a mediated dialogue between three artists from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and three artists from Berlin, Germany. Prior to 1916, the city of Kitchener was known as Berlin. In both Kitchener and Berlin, local artists act as 'guides', choosing a site of particular significance to them and recounting a story in their mother tongue. The artists also act as 'interpreters' by responding to the videos in the other language with a simultaneous written translation based either on their knowledge of the other language or by creative guessing. The written 'translations' appear as subtitles.

Stephanie Caribou, Bobby Coutu, Gabriel Kematch, Samantha Hiebert, Destiny Dawn Sutherland, five Aboriginal/Metis youth-at-risk, were chosen for the opportunity to learn from an Elder the customary use of ceremonial flags. They were taught for five weeks by artistic professionals to learn skills in community development as well as artistic and practical skills in digital media. They worked with Aboriginal artists Scott Stephens (photographer ), Sébastien Aubin (designer) and KC Adams (visual artist). The five artists set out to engage in the local Aboriginal community by photographing participants at The Manito Ahbee International Competition Pow Wow competition in November of 2008.After digitally altering their photographs to create a total of 90 flags, the images were compiled to create 3 public artworks, three billboards fitting 30 flags each.
