Description:

The installation consists of stations featuring plates engraved with quotes from Gabrielle Roy. Each monument is installed at the exact location described in the quote. Some sites also feature five chairs resembling the human body, all reminiscent of a classroom or theatrical composition, two fields that were very close to Gabrielle Roy's heart.

The other baby class was open to all
non-French-speaking children, who were
considered English-speaking though they
weren't really any of English origin, but
rather Russian, Polish, Italian, Spanish,
Irish, Czech, Dutch...

I became very attached to it and very
close to those children, and they taught
me a great deal about the folklore, songs
and dances of their people...

"I began the project by writing down all the sayings that my dad would use, and then did research on commonly used idioms and clichés from North America, which are incredibly culturally specific. From there, I had tons to choose from and the process really moved into the editing phase. It was a lot like writing a 100-line poem. The phonetic flow of each line was really important, along with the interconnected meaning. There are blocks of text that thematically relate to one another." Toni Latour

From May 18 to October 31, 2010, in the entrance hall of the Grande Bibliothèque, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) will be hosting the exhibition Architectures en vers, which consists of five architectural installations inspired by poetry. These installations were created by collectives of well-known and up-and-coming architects working with glass artists. The exhibition is presented as part of the “Montréal, 2010 City of Glass” program, under the direction of the Board of Montreal Museum Directors.

Murmures dans la main du temps is a spiral sculpture. Its labyrinthine structure of woven raw material evokes movement, inviting the viewer to stroll along, carried by the words of the poet from Natashquan. All words are stained yellow, except for the word "rouge" (red), which is red.

"A library is an ordered resource for accessing information to further one's knowledge and to enhance one's learning. The route taken to that information can guide the thought process and determine the end conclusions. Leonardo realized this a few centuries ago; Our concept is to challenge users of the facility to rethink their thought processes. The most opportune time to accomplish this is before entering the Library - confronting the viewer by having them walk through the piece - and perhaps encouraging them to leave their previous perceptions at the door. The format in presenting the concept is another Leonardo da Vinci exercise - a geometric discovery of form, mathematics and order. Our interpretation of the exercise challenges the viewer's perceptions: first, by engaging the individual in a visual puzzle that defines the various elements of the geometry in a manner that also juggles their perceptions; and secondly, by making visual references to the cosmos that will take the viewer beyond the physical piece to consider the mysteries of the mind, universe, and of course, the search for truth. In locating the piece at, and as the entrance, it emphasizes Public Art as a functioning component of life and architecture - the concept challenging one's thought process and the physical statement aiding in the flow and function of the ordered architecture."

This mural recognizes and perpetuates the Act of Rememberance for all of our Veterans. It is a transitional collage of images that recognizes the different theatres of war. Note(s):

For me, Miron's poetry evokes forms. So I thought of the elm, this tree which had almost disappeared at the beginning of last century but which has regained artistic significance thanks to Marc-Aurèle Fortin and Armand Vaillancourt. My work also pays tribute to them.

If I had the chance right now to erase all of it,

to start over again hitchhiking home

from a fishing trip with Don in the back

of that pick-up truck and not have the

accident happen. If I could just pick up

my life at that point as opposed to living

the life I’ve lived since. I wouldn’t take it.

For the next months I lay in a

Stryker frame bolted tightly between

two hard narrow bed pads which rotated

in the middle of a large, metal framework

I was unable to move. For the first time

in my life I was alone and absolutely

helpless...One night I lay sweating...

my head pounding...my back on fire with

pain. I wanted everything to be over. At

that moment my life seemed worthless.

black...awake...I’m alive

no...can’t ...pain....I can’t move

my legs

At the age of 15 I was athlete of the year

at my High School. It was June 27 1973.

My friend and I were hitchhiking back

from fishing when we caught a ride with

a guy in a pick-up.

a man came alongside me in a red

convertible. “I hear you were a good

athlete. Why not get back in a little

competition?” He had his own wheelchair

in the back seat....Stan Stronge, a

pioneer in wheelchair sports, recipient of

the Order of Canada, a friend who changed

my life by being there for me, he helped

me realize the value of helping others.

Then in 1980 Terry Fox came striding along

on a prosthetic leg with his Marathon of

Hope. I watched how people responded

to him and later after his death, how they

continued to honor his spirit. They

acknowledged how much good can come

from one young man and a dream. In a world

in which people with disabilities felt

invisible Terry Fox made people see the

invisible. I decided Terry’s theme to

raise awareness would be the focus of

my wheelchair journey around the world.

When I come back and it’s all over

I want to be able to wake up ...see

a picture of me in the wheelchair,

sitting on the Great Wall of China.

on the road, she has taken

the challenge.

until dark by about a hundred

young children.

People don’t understand what the tour

is about yet, even most of us who were

on it. Rick was off in right field with his

reality which was the pursuit and the

the preservation of his dream. We were in left

field with our own reality, the day to day grind

working in the outside world to make it as

easy as possible for him to do that and

somehow we all had to get together in the

centre.

...I had to find my own personal

victories in order to carry on. So I

looked for a smile from a passerby

searched for a wheeling stroke that

felt good

eastern US...devastating failure

perhaps low point of the tour

we’d crossed one of the biggest, most powerful and

wealthy countries in the world and put only $6,000 in the

Legacy Fund. BUT WE’D MADE IT THIS FAR!

stories of a big reception, brass band

We started the tour before we were ready, things weren’t

happening and we were paying for it. I was sniping at everyone

I also knew that I had to uncover the source of my feelings.

If I didn’t my anger was going to drive everyone

away. I came to recognize that the driving force behind my

reactions was fear, frustration and the overwhelming

sense of responsibility.

hours and 23 miles every session,

second day, completely overwhelmed

by doubt and uncertainty, had developed

tendonitis in my wrists, elbows and shoulders

the result of 70 miles of wheeling into 60

mile per hour headwinds with the temperature

resting around freezing.

when your dream and reality

actually meet...thousands cheering, leaning out of

windows...smell of the dream...horns

and sirens blasting, sensory overload...

the final turn...cut the ribbon...home

until one is committed there is uncertainty

for the crew, long, tiring days

with little relief

I view this tour like trying to push a boulder

up a steep hill. Lately a lot of people have

tried to take me from behind that boulder

and set me on top of it, make something

special out of me. please put me

back behind the boulder, and let me try to

push it a little bit further.

Halfway...12,450.775 miles...no

longer going away from home...we’re

going home...one year on the road.

47 pairs worn out gloves...300 rolls

of tape...4 robberies...1 worn out

...7,180,800 wheelchair strokes

we reached all levels

of society...we were treated

with respect and dignity

China promised a glimpse of

the dream coming true

The wind is relentless, fine

eye burning dust

Listen, I've had parents come and

snatch their children away from in front of me

because my voice is strange and

my arms wave around a lot. I’ve had

other children laugh at me. That’s not an

easy thing to accept. Rick has changed that

in Newfoundland. I saw parents running

down the highway with their children, trying

to get a handshake or autograph.

And the kids? They love him. You think

that isn’t going to make a difference.

Description:

The artwork represents a large, open book about nature and art. It marks the importance of remembering artists and offers an overview of different types of art. An excerpt of a poem by Gérald Godin, Cantos, appears on the cover page. It evokes memorable moments of city life and speaks of the passage of time. It also illustrates human beings' attachment for dogs. Two dogs appear in the work. A strip of color made of colored glass also pierces the pages of the book like a film or photographic negative. This refers to the colourful elements that arts bring to the city.

Ice letters were made as memorials to honour those who have passed away. «Friend» was created in memory of the artist's friend Peter Kemp who died in the summer of 2007 in a hiking accident.

Description:

In the hall, a wing hangs diagonally from the ceiling to the floor. It is made of 360 aluminium feathers, a reference to the angels that used to be very present in religious sculpture. A dialogue is created with a commemorative plaque on the wall and on the floor, which features the names of 360 families that were identified in the 2002 census in the municipality.

The current St. Charles presbytary was built in 1840. In order to respond to new realities, the building now serves both as presbytery and as offices for the municipality. Thus, the two facets of administrative, civil and religious life are housed under one roof.

Description:

Mitch Robertson's installation comments on the practices of commemoration and merchandising that produce stars and celebrities – in both the hockey and aesthetic realms. He activates the museum’s showcase rooms with artistic versions of hockey cards, memorabilia and souvenirs, a video of arena audiences, as well as the creation of the world’s largest ball of hockey tape.

Description:

The massive sculpture, which hangs from the atrium ceiling of the University of Calgary's Scurfield Hall, is made from 29,064 laser-cut letters "x" in stainless steel. The total number of metallic "x"s represents the number of days that the artist's 79-year-old grandfather was alive.
