Power at Home

Artwork theme:

The line between propaganda and advertising is a thin one. Star Power presents the viewer with a series of ads that mix communist iconography and images of hydro electricity. Bold and visually stopping, the images further confuse the question of who is in control of electrical power in Ontario: Is it some far left consortium, or is a company simply borrowing the radical chic of Soviet design as part of an ad campaign? Plastered onto construction boarding in downtown Kitchener, the origin and intent of the images remained elusive.

The Star Power Series was presented as part of CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum - Kitchener), September 21-29, 2002. The theme of the 2002 Forum was Power to the People.

"You have water, and the word water. You have love and the word love, but the two will never meet. We will lie beneath the letters in a haze of diaphanous pollution and probability, weighing our odds. I love you at the end of a phone call, it hovers, before the click signaling the end of a sentence, then it falls like equivocal truth. We are mostly water. We are mostly love. We are trying to quit smoking and sugar. We are ridding the body of the word Body. We hold red fruit between our teeth. Our gum-lines pink softened typewriter ribbon. We wrap our meat singing corporate jingles. Not dental insurance and you can carry orajel in your purse to stave off crying jags of frustration. You are my heart, and you are my heart stitched into a canvas. I hold thirty coffee beans. I count caloric value. You have water, the word water, and the body is mostly. We hold ours close. We say the words in hopes they are doing their job and not being as indeterminate as they are. Language tries its best. "Start with a firm foundation. Place the bricks just so. Description:

The work is divided into four wall sections featuring text - articles from the Charter of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The text is displayed in such a way as to form the contours of human body parts - ear, head, hand, eye. The letters are painted white on a white wall. Three life-size human silhouettes appear in distinct colours on the surface of the hologram. The shape of the silhouettes is outlined with letters.

Text theme:

The text evokes excerpts from conversations overheard by the artist or his poetic reflections on everyday life as well as the historical aspect of a building. The text often transposes observations that belong to the private world into public space.

Artwork theme:

The artwork's sentences relate to a more personal, intimate world and to everyday life, rather than to historical events and issues of public interest. They recount trivial stories, evoke fugitive thoughts as well as bits of conversations heard by accident, which were then reorganized into seemingly illogical series. Visitors create their own links between the images that these fragments can trigger, resulting in an exchange, a mutual confidence. These works pay tribute to the ordinary, familiar experience that connects people.

Three plates no longer exist. The plate located at the corner of Laurier and Jeanne-Mance was destroyed during renovations. The plate located at the corner of Richardson and Shearer Streets has been destroyed by employees of the City of Montreal who did not know it was a work of art.The other plate that is missing is the one that stood at the corner of Cherrier and Saint-Hubert streets
The exhibition Promenades, l'art dans la ville aims to bring the public to discover works that occupy public space, outside, works that the public has an opportunity to pass by regularly without really knowing who is hiding behind.

PANIQUE AU FAUBOURG is part of the reflection about industrial land sites being transformed into new cultural areas. Because they are short lived, the artists’ interventions tried to inspire the public to "appropriate" history and the site of the Faubourg des Récollets or Old Griffintown. The proposed idea for the artists was to question and interpret these sites and their history,architecture and problematic urban location through their artwork. Young up-and-coming stars or established renown artists, the artists who were selected for this project were approached for their sensibility and their ability to adapt their work to this type of artistic action. They were from Montreal, the rest of Canada or France.

Artefact 2001 asked artists to momentarily imagine a part of the Lachine Canal (which is still in a "state of hibernation", so to speak, for a few months) like a large found object - an artefact, to be exact. The artists are to occupy and transform a part of the canal, taking into account its physical aspects such as the banks, the water, the bridges and walkways spanning it, the buildings bordering it, its long history and also the archaeology of this kind of infrastructure. In any case, they had to find an original way to create and integrate a poetic installation within the canal's complex restoration.

History:

During the winter of 1969, sculptor Jordi Bonet paints the great mural of the Grand Théâtre de Québec. According to the architect Victor Prus, who designed the building, "it is,one of the first times in the history of contemporary art that visual arts are fully integrated into architecture."

Fueled by this desire for integration, the sculptor began a process to complete the thematic unity between the artwork and the function of the building. Jordi Bonet and his assistants improvised a way to give life to matter, without first making a model. "A cry of love launched into the world", says poet Claude Peloquin, to whom we owe the controversial texts written on the wall.

Description:

Inspired by the "paper doll", a high-relief represents a dress. The back and front are juxtaposed so reversed, one above the other. The lower part (the front) shows a pattern of "root" or "branch". An expression in Irish language, AGUS MHARIDHAR DO GO GO GLIONDRACH WD, inscribed on a metal plate below the high-relief, is none other than the translation of the title.
