Description:

L'artiste propose un circuit dans la galerie et à l'extérieur.

Les huit fenêtres du MAI sont bouchées et donnent à voir des fragments de texte en lettrage fluorescent.

Des affiches de chat disparu en action ont été disséminées sur les murs et les poteaux de Montréal. L'affiche a été retouchée par l'artiste qui a cependant pris soin de préserver l'ensemble des informations.

De l'autre côté des grandes fenêtres, la salle d'exposition du MAI est plongée dans l'obscurité. Quatre stations sont indiquées au sol. Pour chacune, une bande-son et une projection.

Le MAI a donné carte blanche à Michael Fernandes, artiste canadien reconnu pour son parcours et son travail hétéroclite. Lors d’une résidence récente à Montréal, il réalise alors des petits récits vidéographiques, des tableaux presque trop simples. One potato, two potato… c’est un jeu, c’est le hasard certes, mais c’est aussi un changement des rôles, un revirement de situation. Cette œuvre sillonne le mouvement de la construction identitaire avec un style pince-sans-rire.

L'oeuvre est en deux parties:

Cette fable poétique inspirée d’un des grands mythes de l’histoire du monde a pris place sur un petit îlot de verdure situé au centre-ville de Granby et au centre duquel se trouve un grand arbre.

Dans les vitrines des commerces qui font face à l'îlot, on présente de petites vidéos d’animaux du zoo dans leur routine quotidienne.

[Narration 1/11] —

John, who has a penchant for institutional, self-service food, was excited about trying out the new cafeteria at Ikea. We were driving west along the Gardiner Expressway, the lake was on our left, occasionally visible between the Victorian fairground pavilions. Further along, on the right, we passed a series of topiary gardens where the shrubbery depicts various corporate logos and brand names: HP, Westinghouse, Sears, Deloitte & Touche, FedEx, Manulife Financial, Parmalat, Rogers, CGI, Weber, Waterhouse, CN, United Way, Ford, and the City of Toronto. As we drew parallel to the four towering chimneys of the Lakeview Generating Station, John suggested that we should call our new collaborative project “Lakeshore.” I readily agreed, but had great difficulty believing that we were actually going to Ikea to eat.

There was a time when a person could make a respectable living by creating handlettered signage with nothing more sophisticated than a decent lettering brush and a pot of paint. A good signpainter was trained in proportion, scale and detail, understood the origins of typefaces, and had a penchant for experimentation. The trade also attracted other, less assiduous folk, who used it simply as a way to earn some quick cash and then crawl away inside a bottle. You could earn a surprising fee for just several hours’ work. Those of us who thought of ourselves as professionals would speculate on the identity of our fly-by-night competitors whose work was always a shaky, garish mess. Their lettering typically advertised a greasy-spoon restaurant or a discount yard-goods retailer — the proprietors of which presumably didn’t know or care that signpainters, who could have done a real job of it, existed. One such mystery artist we called the Phantom. His work was everywhere. The advent of computer-driven, polyvinyl letter-cutting machines in the ‘80s reduced the trade to a shambles. You no longer came across the Phantom’s work, or anybody else’s who had even a passing acquaintance with the systematic pleasure of twisting a letter out of a brush. What you saw instead was a digital smear of plastic, reams of bad layout and grating colour schemes seemingly shot out of a cannon by dolts who apparently knew how to stack enough dollars in a pile to buy the computer rig but didn’t understand the nature of the graphic travesty they unfurled in the public’s eye. Twenty-five years later, the signmaking business has tamed its machinery and discovered the secrets of composition and balance. Since most everything is plastic, vinyl lettering seamlessly blends in. Handlettering even rears its noble head occasionally when good taste prevails and budgets are extended. Just yesterday I caught myself gladdened to see the front window of a down-market eatery only recently lettered by someone with no ability.

After finishing art college, I worked with Cliff for about a year in his West Toronto sign shop. The business was located on the ground level of a renovated warehouse, and Cliff’s unit had a large storefront window that faced out onto a quiet street of other light-industrial concerns. The candymaker Rowntree was just down the road from us. The sweet smell of chocolate frequently hung in the air. Business was intermittent. It was the early ‘80s and there was a recession. The computer-generated vinyl lettering that would soon replace the handpainted signage that Cliff specialized in was still a few years off, and on occasion we did get large jobs: showcards announcing seminars at dental conferences, outdoor signs advertising new residential developments, showpiece wooden signs for upscale restaurants. Often this work was last minute, and we would paint late into the night. Invariably, when this occurred we would get a call from a sexual prankster. He would dryly relate to us in great detail how terrific it was to masturbate while listening to the sound of our voices. Whenever I picked up the phone to find him on the other end, I would immediately slam down the receiver. This was an involuntary reaction, and may well have been exactly what the caller was looking for. Cliff, on the other hand, would switch the caller onto speakerphone, and engage him for some time by sarcastically playing along.

The rain folds the night, paper crackling between its arthritic fingers. We drive without talking, without thinking, the world around us an open mouth. The wheels hold us, humming over wet concrete. Service center like a space station, we find our feet again, unfold-lock up, fumble, walk, and float. The air starched hard against our teeth. We carry out, and swallow sweet. Tonight, tonight,tomorrow, tomorrow, we go, slamming doors, tiny teeth of a key kissing the ignition.

Start with a firm foundation. Place the bricks just so. Les seules instructions qui leur ont été données étaient les mots «THE SHAPE OF FEAR WALL» sur un mur et «THE SHAPE OF HOPE WALL» sur un autre dans la pièce. Avec les matériaux fournis, ils ont produit du texte et des images en réaction à cela.
Les films projetés au cours de la soirée servaient à instruire la population canadienne pendant la guerre froide, afin qu’elle apprenne comment réagir dans le cas d’une attaque nucléaire.
L’exposition comprenait une aire de lecture («reference area», A. MacDonell) dans laquelle se trouvait divers documents : des photocopies d’informations cueillies par l’artiste au cours de sa recherche personnelle sur la guerre froide, des graphiques gouvernementaux (niveaux municipal, provincial et fédéral) de l’époque, estimant l’impact d’une éventuelle attaque nucléaire sur Toronto/le pays, puis aussi des bandes dessinées des années 50 et 60. Une section regroupait de message officiel émis par le gouvernement concernant la guerre froide. Une deuxième section regroupait les médias de l’époque qui ont réagi à ce message.

Description:

Vaste installation répartie sur quatre sites: à partir de la place en face du bâtiment, dans le hall d'entrée, au-dessus de la cage d'escalier principal et dans les salles de lecture de la bibliothèque. Une spirale unifie les pièces. La colonne centrale située dans le bâtiment du hall d'entrée est couverte de miroirs et ressemble à une vis sans fin. Prenant en compte le lieu, le travail souligne constamment des références linguistiques par l'inclusion de fragments de texte dans différentes langues, des lettres et des signes.

Description:

L’installation photographique fait référence au drame des réfugiés de la mer vietnamiens (boat people) enfermés dans les centres de détention de Hong Kong alors qu’ils demandaient l’asile. L’œuvre est constituée de quatre photographies encadrées représentant le Centre de détention Whitehead, d’une autre photographie de la mer de Hong Kong présentée dans un caisson lumineux, d’une bande vidéo qui diffuse, entre autres, les images d’un plan d’eau et d’une porte fermée. Les visiteurs peuvent se procurer des reproductions sous forme de cartes postales au coût d’un dollar chacune, au verso desquelles figure un texte décrivant la scène. Sur les tables des restaurants, des napperons bleus représentent des vagues, expliquent la situation des « boat people » et donnent la définition du terme « réfugié ».
