Description:

Six lettres faites de feutres et d'herbe de blé épèlent le mot G * R * O * W * T * H ("croissance"). Cultivées dans la banque pendant deux semaines avant l'ouverture, l'approvisionnement en eau a ensuite été coupé pendant la durée de l'exposition ce qui abouti à la mort lente de l'installation (c.-à-d. la fin de la croissance, "growth").

Description:

L'oeuvre fait référence à la fois à Regina qui a le statut de « The Queen City », du nom de la reine Victoria, et au soleil brillant des prairies qui éclaire les rues et les parcs. Cette oeuvre de Rachelle Viader Knowles et Don Gill explore Victoria Park aujourd'hui : comme un concept et un lieu, juxtaposés à une histoire de Victoria Park et les bâtiments qui sont passés autour de lui.

Le travail de Rachelle Viader Knowles comprend une installation vidéo / liaison avec sa nièce, à Victoria Park, Cardiff, Pays de Galles, et d'une intervention dans le parc de Régina. Les mots «Think of England» sont inscrits sur le couvre-sol. Don Gill crée une photo « archives » des quartiers qu'il traverse à l'intérieur et autour du parc Victoria. «The text Think of England, inserted into Victoria Park which sits in front of the Dunlop Art Gallery, is both political in its historical instruction to respect and consider a ‘motherland’ and a critique as a question posed to the reader – what do YOU think of England? It is also a personal question posed to and by myself as someone born there, unsure of how to address nationhood, national affiliation, a sense of longing and belonging to place, as someone who grew up English as a ‘foreigner’ in Wales and lives as a ‘foreigner’ here, both places where local languages were systematically suppressed through acts of attempted eradication by the English.»

Cette décision a permis l’ajout, deux années après l’installation initiale, d’une murale photographique en noir et blanc, faisant 1,2 m x 1,2 m, originalement utilisée dans American Cloisonné (1987-1988)

Foreword, sept-nov 2004, Grimsby Public Art Gallery, Grimsby. Sa pièce «The Name of the Tree» est une histoire écrite directement sur les feuilles de l'arbre. Beaucoup de gens ne voient que des aperçus de l'histoire, et une fois que l'automne est arrivé, son histoire est tombée au sol ou a été emportée. Frank Simon invitait les gens à interagir avec lui au cours du processus — parler, poser des questions et même à partager leurs histoires avec lui.

Description:

Third Garden est conçu comme un monument à la mémoire locale. Ce jardin se réfère à l'utilisation passée du parc : jardin de guérison pour les soins psychiatriques. L'installation intègre l'architecture du paysage avec des éléments sculpturaux. Le texte dans le pavé est basé sur des histoires orales et enregistrées de l'ancien hôpital psychiatrique de Lakeshore.

You should see our sea of cabbages!

June 30, 1932

Went out with the other patients to cut and rake the grass, pick strawberries form the garden between the Assembly Hall and the Nurses’ Residence. Got a good workout. Came in good and hungry. Tired. West straight to bed after our meal.

October 11, 1958

The gardens have been taken away from us. We can’t work in them anymore. Something about cheap labour.

December 3, 1959

We went to see him today. We sat in the car afterwards. My daughter said, ‘That’s my brother’ and I said, ‘That’s my son.’ It was a very sad time.

September 1, 1979

They’re closing the hospital soon. They loaded us up this morning. We’re being taken to a place we don’t know. Some cried.

There is something revelational about walking daily in a familiar place.

Le texte simule la forme de citations. Cependant, il s’agit d’une fiction narrative. Elle se base ou plutôt s’inspire d’une documentation historique, en la forme de récits oraux, portant sur l’ancien hôpital psychiatrique de Lakeshore.

La commande de cette œuvre s'est faite dans la cadre de rénovations d’édifices historiques et de réaménagements paysagers dans la Ville de Toronto.

L’œuvre est située dans le jardin/terrasse extérieur de l’établissement.

Description:

L’œuvre prend la forme d’un cadran solaire. Au centre d’une place est installé un monolithe de granit rose où est gravé une phrase. De plus, une perche en angle est tenue par une tige (l’ombre projetée au sol suit les mouvements du soleil). Des pierres rectangulaires sont disposées horizontalement au sol et marquent les dernières heures de la journée.

L'aiguille, par son ombre, pousse les secondes éphémères et les jours écoulés à s'inscrire et se stocker dans les anneaux de mémoire des arbres.
