As part of the Prince Arthur’s Landing public art plan, a variety of literary selections have been integrated throughout Marina Park, creating opportunities for moments of reflection along the shores of Lake Superior. In addition to cultural and interpretive signs, the redeveloped park contains a series of modern and historical literary works by local and regional authors.

Note(s):

La terre a été inspirée d'après une carte de Buckminster Fuller qui fut esquissée en 1927. Elle possède la qualité de nous présenter la terre sans interruption.

La murale est composée de pierres provenant de différentes régions du globe. L'ensemble reprend l'idée du jeu de mot caché. On y retrouve en tout quinze mots déchiffrables dans tous les sens. Ces mots sont des métiers qu'exercent encore des enfants.

Culture multiethnique du quartier.

Déployés stratégiquement en haut, au centre et en bas de la côte, les sites principaux forment une famille de lieux publics reconnaissables par l’utilisation d’une tectonique et de matériaux identiques et par la présence d’un programme commémoratif rappelant la valeur identitaire d’une ancienne commune qui définissait le secteur au moment du premier lotissement. À eux trois, les sites ancrent le programme d’amélioration et de débordement du domaine public et visent à réaffirmer, sur l’ensemble du parcours, la valeur de l’espace de la rue dans le sentiment collectif de la communauté.

Réalisée dans le cadre du programme Renouveau Urbain visant la revitalisation physique et socio-économique de quartiers urbanisés.

Ce projet vise à donner une identité propre au chemin, à en faire un lieu d’animation commerciale et une destination événementielle célébrant la diversité culturelle de l’arrondissement.

If I had the chance right now to erase all of it,

to start over again hitchhiking home

from a fishing trip with Don in the back

of that pick up truck and not have the

accident happen. If I could just pick up

my life at that point as opposed to living

the life I’ve lived since. I wouldn’t take it.

For the next months I lay in a

Stryker frame bolted tightly between

two hard narrow bed pads which rotated

in the middle of a large, metal framework

I was unable to move. For the first time

in my life I was alone and absolutely

helpless...One night I lay sweating...

my head pounding...my back on fire with

pain. I wanted everything to be over. At

that moment my life seemed worthless.

my legs

At the age of 15 I was athlete of the year

at my High School. It was June 27 1973.

My friend and I were hitchhiking back

from fishing when we caught a ride with

a guy in a pick up.

a man came alongside me in a red

convertible. “ I hear you were a good

athlete. Why not get back in a little

competition?” He had his own wheelchair

in the back seat....Stan Stronge, a

pioneer in wheelchair sports, recipient of

the Order of Canada, a friend who changed

my life by being there for me, he helped

me realize the value of helping others.

Then in 1980 Terry Fox came striding along

on a prosthetic leg with his Marathon of

Hope. I watched how people responded

to him and later after his death, how they

continued to honor his spirit. They

acknowledged how much good can come

from one young man and a dream. In a world

in which people with disabilities felt

invisible Terry Fox made people see the

invisible. I decided Terry’s theme to

raise awareness would be the focus of

my wheelchair journey around the world.

is about yet, even most of us who were

on it. Rick was off in right field with his

field with our own reality, the day to day grind

easy as possible for him to do that and

somehow we all had to get together in the

Legacy Fund. BUT WE’D MADE IT THIS FAR!

We started the tour before we were ready, things weren’t

happening and we were paying for it. I was sniping at everyone

I also knew that I had to uncover the source of my feelings.

If I didn’t my anger was going to drive everyone

away. I came to recognize that the driving force behind my

reactions was fear, frustration and the overwhelming

sense of responsibility.

easy thing to accept. Rick has changed that

in Newfoundland. I saw parents running

down the highway with their children, trying

to get a handshake or autograph.

And the kids? They love him. You think

that isn’t going to make a difference.

117 plaques de bronze installées au sol (dans le dallage) du développement Coal Harbour, au pied de Cardero Street à Vancouver. Ses plaques sont de diverses tailles et formes. Elles sont couvertes d’une centaine d’images illustrant des icônes d’ingénierie (formules et symboles mathématiques, schéma, diagrammes, outils, etc.) accompagnées de fragments de textes témoignant de l’histoire officielle et non officielle de la Ville de Vancouver. Le titre de l’œuvre, «Make West», provient d’un fragment poétique vieilli apparaissant sur l’une des plaques (murale de l’École bilingue).

Il s'agit d'un monument érigé à l'occasion du passage du Pape Jean-Paul II à Hull le 19 septembre 1984.

Dans le but d'inscrire à tout jamais cet événement mémorable dans la mémoire des gens de Hull et de l'Outaouais, le maire Marcel Beaudry a procédé, lors d'une cérémonie très spéciale, au dévoilement d'un monument commémoratif de la visite papale. Il était accompagné pour cette occasion de l'archevêque du diocèse, monseigneur Roger Ébacher et d'un groupe nombreux de dignitaires ecclésiastiques et d'invités spéciaux.

Description:

L'œuvre se compose d'un banc de granit, de 26 dalles enchâssées au sol et de quatre petits bronzes greffés à la Maison des Éclusiers. Le banc reproduit la forme de l'îlot Normandin, petite île qui était située dans le fleuve à une centaine de mètres de la pointe à Callière avant qu'une jetée de terre ne la rattache à l'île de Montréal, en 1834, puis qu'elle ne disparaisse peu à peu, absorbée dans les développements portuaires. Les dalles réparties autour du « banc-île » contiennent chacune deux mots, formant un ensemble de 52 mots choisis pour illustrer divers champs de pratique de l'ingénierie. Les mots sont gravés dans une ou l'autre de neuf langues, illustrant la dimension internationale des activités du port de Montréal. Enfin, quatre petites îles en bronze, représentant l'évolution de l'îlot Normandin jusqu'à son rattachement au port de Montréal, sont apposées sur la balustrade de la rotonde de la Maison des Éclusiers. Un panneau d'interprétation, fixé à la façade de la Maison des Éclusiers, accompagne cette illustration.

L'œuvre traite des origines du port de Montréal. Les quatre petites îles de bronze montrent l'îlot Normandin de 1760 jusqu'à son intégration au port. Le « banc-île » rappelle encore cet îlot ancien, mais entouré de dalles au sol qui montrent la forme qu'on lui donne lors de son rattachement à la berge.

Les mots qui gravitent autour deviennent une métaphore du port en devenir. Les dalles multilingues, sur toute la place, sont à la fois un symbole des navires en provenance de divers pays, et un hommage rendu aux réalisations des ingénieurs. Par le lexique qu'elles élaborent, elles illustrent les diverses facettes de la profession. Ce lexique ouvre à la pensée de multiples sentiers tout en balisant le chemin parcouru entre L'Île des Commencements et la naissance du port de Montréal.

Cette œuvre multifonctionnelle offre plusieurs niveaux de lecture : une pièce de mobilier au centre d'une agora où convergent plusieurs trajets de circulation piétonnière; une interprétation doublement commémorative par le rappel de l'îlot Normandin et de ses transformations liées aux ouvrages d'ingénierie; finalement, une œuvre d'intégration à l'espace public en interaction avec les promeneurs, livrant un vocabulaire et des pistes de réflexion. Malgré l'occasion commémorative, l'œuvre demeure discrète, sans référence à des technologies complexes, ce qui n'altère pas sa puissance d'évocation.

Une fusillade a lieu en 1999. En réaction, le conseil municipal adopte une stratégie et décide d’engager la communauté Jane-Finch.
Mars-octobre 2000 : le conseil établit des fonds de 150,000 $ pour la création d’une œuvre d’art public pour encourager l’esprit communautaire, célébrer de la diversité culturelle et pour servir de lieu de rencontre aux membres de la communauté Jane-Finch. Suite à une consultation publique, un comité de pilotage, formé de résidents et de fonctionnaires, choisit le site du Driftwood Community Centre (centre communautaire Driftwood) pour l’œuvre en devenir.
Le 12 octobre 2000, on annonce Linda Covit comme gagnante du concours d’art public («Jane-Finch Public Art Competition»).
La conception finale de l’œuvre se concrétise en hiver de l’an 2000.
Le projet débute en octobre 2001.
Des arbres sont plantés sur le site en printemps 2002.
L’œuvre est inaugurée le 8 juin 2002 au Driftwood Community Centre.

« This commission by the City of Toronto (Canada) is installed on the grounds of a community centre in an economically disadvantaged, multicultural neighbourhood. Among other themes developed in consultation with the community, the artwork was expected to create an outside meeting place. My installation sculpts a three-dimensional space to encourage interaction between people. The main component, a wide stone bench, traces a sixty foot long arc. The circular movement is reinforced by a stand of light columns and an arc of birch trees along the outside curve of the bench. Narrow lengths of granite, alternating with bands of river stones, form a footpath into the circle. Each granite piece is incised with a thin channel to collect rain or snow. On dry days, the shadowed dark lines evoke the ephemoral liquid lines. Small boulders engraved with words – such as heritage, trust, friendship, gathering – are scattered within this circle, and extend outwards through the adjacent wooded grounds.»

A tot or two of weak grog finished the feast then some would fall asleep. «I chose black granite as the material for this work because of its colour and reflective quality. Using a portrait format measuring 2 feet by 4 feet, its placement is 1 inch above the gallery floor so as to give the illusion of the stone floating. Cut into the polished surface, the word ‘stillness’, divided below the level of syllables, is done so to suggests layers. It requires one to slow down when attempting to sound the word. The gold and silver circles above and below the letters symbolize the dualism found in nature. The use of word ‘stillness’ here does not mean motionless, rather it includes motion. Where stillness includes motion, there exists a repose that is an inner concentration of motion. The colouration of black granite gives a sense of depth and suggests concealment. The earth reveals a capacity and endurance reflected in its ongoing reconciliation of the heterogeneous forces within. Stillness is where differences rest in unity.»

Le repos, le savoir; la vie et la mort

History:

Thèmes : Les thèmes du repos et du savoir se résument au suivant : le repos fait référence au repos éternel des défunts dans le cimetière à proximité du lieu d’exposition (Royal Botanical Gardens), mais aussi au jardin botanique, conçu au XIXe siècle comme aire de repos et de contemplation. Les plaques de granit posées sur le sol rappellent les pierres tombales du cimetière. L’idée de repos est évoquée encore par son contraire dans le mot « rise » (éveil), qui fait allusion à la résurrection des morts. Dans cette installation d’un récit dans le jardin, le thème du savoir est manifeste par une référence à la nomenclature botanique (« iris » est une fleur) et par le texte même, l’écriture étant un outil de communication linguistique fondamental. D’autres allusions, de nature biblique, existent encore en ce qui concerne le thème du savoir (dans le contexte d’un jardin).

Description:

L’œuvre commémorative s’intègre à la place du 6 décembre-1989 dédiée aux quatorze victimes du meurtre collectif perpétré à l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. Sept arcs de cercle en granit sont disposés côte à côte à intervalles irréguliers, de part et d'autre de l'allée piétonnière. Le visiteur peut y lire le nom d’une défunte inscrit en lettres inversées. La première lettre de chaque prénom consiste en une « stèle » en acier inoxydable. À la base de chacun de ces monuments figurent les dates de naissance et de décès de la jeune femme décédée. Deux alignements d’arbres longent parallèlement ce mémorial.

Description:

L’œuvre est constituée d'un monolithe en granit posé au sol et d'une structure en métal. Cette structure, fixée au sommet du monolithe, est composée de l'armature de sept cubes. Les cubes sont disposés en forme de deux X emboîtés l'un dans l'autre, de façon à former un hyper-cube. Deux plaques en granit poli, portant chacune une inscription, sont fixées à l'avant et à l'arrière du monolithe. La plaque fixée sur le côté arrière du monolithe célèbre le poète Alphonse Piché (1917-1998) qui fit ses études au Séminaire de Trois-Rivières.
