Description:

Six bannières accrochées dans l’atrium de la bibliothèque. Le texte est de couleur tertiaire pour symboliser la connaissance comme un phénomène jamais neutre, alimentée par l’extérieur. La couleur des bannières est la même que celle des murs de la bibliothèque pour créer l'effet que le texte est inscrit directement sur les murs.

L'artiste décrit son oeuvre «premised on the library’s role as a site of knowledge production. Though the activities of the library’s users are immensely varied and particular, this work imagines them as a shared curiosity directed towards a differently articulated future. The general concern of the text is the provisional character of knowledge as expressed through language…The texts use tertiary colours (red-orange, blue-green, etc.) to represent knowledge as a variegated phenomena coloured by things at a distance, always motivated and never neutral. The texts are placed against a background approximating the colour of the walls of Library Square to appear as if inscribed directly on the building’s surface.»

Description:

L'artiste propose un circuit dans la galerie et à l'extérieur.

Les huit fenêtres du MAI sont bouchées et donnent à voir des fragments de texte en lettrage fluorescent.

Des affiches de chat disparu en action ont été disséminées sur les murs et les poteaux de Montréal. L'affiche a été retouchée par l'artiste qui a cependant pris soin de préserver l'ensemble des informations.

De l'autre côté des grandes fenêtres, la salle d'exposition du MAI est plongée dans l'obscurité. Quatre stations sont indiquées au sol. Pour chacune, une bande-son et une projection.

Le MAI a donné carte blanche à Michael Fernandes, artiste canadien reconnu pour son parcours et son travail hétéroclite. Lors d’une résidence récente à Montréal, il réalise alors des petits récits vidéographiques, des tableaux presque trop simples. One potato, two potato… c’est un jeu, c’est le hasard certes, mais c’est aussi un changement des rôles, un revirement de situation. Cette œuvre sillonne le mouvement de la construction identitaire avec un style pince-sans-rire.

Un jour d’octobre en 2003, à Toronto, à la demande de Laurel Woodcock, l’Adler Aviation Company a fait voler un avion tirant derrière lui une bannière sur laquelle était écrit WISH YOU WERE HERE.

Le 15 janvier 2004, à Guelph, l’événement a été répété pendant trente minutes, lors de l’ouverture de l’exposition de l’artiste au Macdonald Stewart Art Centre.

Les trois vidéos présentés sont les suivantes : Location shoot, A favorite film from each letter of the alphabet/a favorite film from each year since my birth et la documentation du vol aérien (3 m 30 s).

Walk-through is a preproduction term in the film industry for rehearsal where performers speak their lines, practice cues and movements, but no shooting occurs. As part of the residency at The Banff Centre for the Arts, I have transcribed excerpts of direction from film scripts into metallic silver vinyl lettering, using the standard font and formatting from the scriptwriting software "Final Draft". These cinematic instructions for everyday gestures and vernacular dialogue have been placed in locations where the texts suggest the actions of passersby in those sites.

Ivan Jurakic installed two lines of prosaic text onto the entrance way to the gallery «Looking one may never find/Wanting one may never know». His piece, entitled «Spell» examines the idea of a quest or search, particularly relevant to the person’s reason for entering the gallery/library space. His work suggests entering as an act of faith that one should come to with an open mind. While inside the space, one may discover things that were unlooked for or unexpected but invaluable.

Description:

Sur une surface composée de douze boîtiers de merisier russe teint en blanc sont peintes en bleu outremer de fines racines. L'élément central, situé en premier plan, se divise en trois parties. Sur la section du bas, des textes manuscrits, datés de 1903 et provenant d'archives pharmaceutiques sont gravés les uns sur les autres sur une surface d'acier patiné. La section du centre est éclairée par l’arrière et présente une impression numérique de racines. La partie du haut représente un tronc d’arbre coupé.
