"Roots of our Future honours the history and current activities of the Richmond Fire Department while also representing the community of Steveston. It is an undulating wave-like form that uses images to reflect Richmond Fire-Rescue and the region’s history and changing character.

On each side of the artwork is an enlarged section of a Pacific Crab Apple tree. These trees line the banks of Scotch Pond adjacent to Garry Point Park in Steveston. They are hardy, robust trees with small red fruit and while standing beside these trees on a cold winter day, I felt they represent the strength and resilience of the fisherman who have moored their boats here for generations, and in addition reflect the committed work of firefighters. I saw the red fruit as a symbol of hope for both group’s safe return to their homes and families.

The text represents the history of Steveston and provides a glimpse into the lives of those that make up this community. These phrases were the result of reading oral histories from the Richmond Archives and then in my own words expressing these in simple language."

Description:

Murale I : Murale créée par le designer graphique Thomas Csano et le calligraphe Luc Saucier reprend des éléments visuels de six différents tableaux de Borduas. Un extrait du Refus global, le manifeste artistique publié par les Automatistes en 1948, a été écrit sur le mur mais des mots sont cachés par des tâches noires représentant les tableaux du peintre. Le mot MANIFESTE, écrit en grosses lettres, a été placé sur la gauche de l'œuvre. Des oiseaux rouges figurant les 16 signataires du Refus global ont aussi été dessinés en contraste d'un essaim noir symbolisant le peuple. Sur la base de la murale, des codes barres suggèrent la modernité du geste des Automatistes.

Murale II: Cette murale-ci est en écho et en continuité avec l'autre murale. La reprise des code-barres de part et d’autre unifient l’espace. Les taches reprennent ses œuvres et sont une reproduction symétrique du mouvement des oiseaux. Les lignes rouges amènent une verticalité en opposition avec l’horizontalité de l’autre murale. L’œuvre se veut aussi un regard plus moderne sur l’héritage de Borduas. Le texte avec une typographie plus actuelle met en valeur Paul-Émile Borduas, l’homme, ainsi que des moments charnières de sa vie, des mots-clés liés à son œuvre, etc. Finalement, la main représente le geste artistique spontané de l’œuvre de Borduas ainsi que le geste créateur.

Le 22 février 2010 marquait le 50e anniversaire du décès de Paul-Émile Borduas. À cette occasion, MU contribuait à l’embellissement et à la revitalisation de la Place Paul-Émile Borduas en produisant une première murale, Manifeste à Paul-Émile Borduas.

En 2011, MU a produit la phase II du projet en réalisant une nouvelle murale sur le mur sud de la même ruelle, créant ainsi une réelle immersion dans le corridor « artistique » menant à la BAnQ.

Description:

Œuvre inspirée des panneaux d’affichage des théâtres d’autres fois. Les deux artistes ont intégré dans les murs des couloirs et du hall d’entrée du projet d’agrandissement, deux murales en carreaux de verre brillants qui célèbrent le théâtre tout en encouragent l’interaction du public. Des milliers de petits carreaux de verre chatoyants réfléchissent les couleurs et la lumière et les font briller comme s’ils étaient illuminés, révélant lentement au spectateur les lignes d’un texte. Écrit sous la forme d’un scénario de théâtre minimaliste, avec personnages, indications scéniques et lignes, ce texte multilingue dévoilé à l’entrée de la scène montre des membres du public assistant au théâtre. En haut, la mention SHHHHH, carrelée en rouge vif, rappelle le rideau d’un théâtre invitant le public à garder le silence avant un spectacle.

Je t’écris cette lettre depuis l’an 2010 à

Victoriaville . J’espère que tu aimes cette

ville autant que l’ai aimée. Tant d’années se

sont écoulées comme neiges au printemps.

Cela me touche beaucoup de t’écrire de si loin.

Est-ce que les oies sauvages se donnent encore

rendez-vous chaque automne au lac Bulstrode ?

Je t’écris depuis mon enfance, mon adolescence.

De la courbure de l’âge. Du temps passé et à

venir.

Nous sommes faits de lettres, de mots. Lettres

de voyage. Lettres à mon père, à ma mère .

Lettres d’amour. Tant de signes sur la page,

sur l’écran. Lettres pour la paix. Pour le

futur. Courriel à l’ami . Tant de mots. De

peine, d’espoir, d’ennui, de bonheur. Le

paysage est une lettre ouverte. Nous écrit.

Mille enveloppes . Mille visages. J’aimerais te

dire…. C’était le mois de mai. L’odeur des

lilas…

COMME UNE LETTRE RÉUNIE est un projet d'art public qui revisite la notion de monument commémoratif en recueillant la parole des simples citoyens. Le processus de création et la sculpture elle-même sont un véhicule par lequel les mots traverseront le temps. Cette sculpture, soulignant le 150e anniversaire de Victoriaville, laisse une trace durable dans le paysage urbain afin que les générations futures puissent, à travers une œuvre d’art, garder vivant le fil ténu de la mémoire.

Dans un premier temps, les initiateurs du projet ont sollicité des lettres aux victoriavillois du futur via une boîte aux lettres spéciale installée au centre-ville ainsi qu'un site internet. Environ 200 lettres, souvent rédigées à la main, parfois accompagnées d'illustrations et souvent très élaborées ont été recueillies et partagées pendant un temps déterminé dans l'espace public du site internet. Ces lettres représentent un corpus diversifié et pertinent qui aborde pratiquement tous les styles épistolaires et tous les sujets et préoccupations de la population.

Lors du dévoilement de la sculpture, en septembre 2011, une quinzaine d'auteurs ont lu publiquement leur lettre. Les 200 lettres ont été déposées dans une mallette qui fut scellée dans la sculpture par trois jeunes «passeurs» de trois, dix et trente ans. Ces derniers se sont engagés,lors d'une petite cérémonie civique à la mairie, à réouvrir la sculpture dans cinquante ans, soit en 2061. L'oeuvre est installée dans un espace intimiste près de l'hôtel de ville dans un lieu fréquenté par les passants.

Description:

Six bannières accrochées dans l’atrium de la bibliothèque. Le texte est de couleur tertiaire pour symboliser la connaissance comme un phénomène jamais neutre, alimentée par l’extérieur. La couleur des bannières est la même que celle des murs de la bibliothèque pour créer l'effet que le texte est inscrit directement sur les murs.

L'artiste décrit son oeuvre «premised on the library’s role as a site of knowledge production. Though the activities of the library’s users are immensely varied and particular, this work imagines them as a shared curiosity directed towards a differently articulated future. The general concern of the text is the provisional character of knowledge as expressed through language…The texts use tertiary colours (red-orange, blue-green, etc.) to represent knowledge as a variegated phenomena coloured by things at a distance, always motivated and never neutral. The texts are placed against a background approximating the colour of the walls of Library Square to appear as if inscribed directly on the building’s surface.»

Description:

Sculpture fontaine avec des rideaux de pluie et un bassin réfléchissant contenant des projections vidéo. La vidéo montre des personnes de diverses communautés parlant de leur langue maternelle. Les panneaux de verre qui surplombe le toit sont gravés de symboles tirés des langues parlées à Surrey. Les quatre colonnes qui supportent le toit servent de haut-parleur. L'audio est transmis à travers les trous des colonnes. Ces dessins perforés forment du texte en braille.

L'installation est composée de stations, où sur des plaques sont gravées des citations de Gabrielle Roy. Les monuments sont placés dans le lieu exact décrit par la citation. Certains sites sont également composés de cinq chaises à formes humaines, l’ensemble rappelant une situation de salle de classe ou une situation de théâtre, deux domaines chers à Gabrielle Roy.

L'autre classe des petits était ouverte
à tout ce qui n'était pas de langue
française, compris dans la catégorie
anglaise, encore qu'elle ne comptait guère
d'enfant d'origine anglaise, mais plutôt
russe, polonaise, italienne, espagnole,
irlandaise, tchèque, flamande...

Au bout de quelques années, je m'étais
tellement attachée à ma classe qui m'en
apprenait sur le folklore, les chants, les
danses et les peuples...

J'étais si près de ces enfants que le
frère Joseph m'ayant tout de même
proposé la troisième ou la quatrième
année, je le suppliai de me laisser avec
mes petits immigrants.

Au couvent, les religieuses entretenaient
chez nous des sentiments d'héroïque
défense. Bravant la loi, prenant sur
leurs pauvres loisirs des heures
supplémentaires, elles continuaient à
nous instruire en français...

Ainsi stimulée, aiguillonnée, je raflai,
dans mes dernières années d'étude,
tous les prix octroyés par l'Association
des Canadiens français du Manitoba, à
l'élève obtenant la première place aux
examens de français

« I began the project by writing down all the sayings that my dad would use, and then did research on commonly used idioms and cliches from North America, which are incredibly culturally specific. From there, I had tons to choose from andthe process really moved into the editing phase. It was a lot like writing a 100-line poem. The phonetic flow of each line was really important, along with the interconnected meaning. There are blocks of text that thematically relate to one another.» Toni Latour
