This winter I was in Toronto working on a project based on the book: The Municipal Mind, by the city's poet laureate, Pier Giorgio Di Cicco. His eloquent writing, about how the vibrancy of a city depends on the creative spirit of the individuals who occupy it, has inspired me to create random, ephemeral installations on it’s streets and in it’s parks. I am interested in how we negotiate space in an urban environment, how we create community out of the chaos.

My words are made out of ice- a medium that exemplifies the transient nature of all things. In the city, the poetic melting of the ice word is often interrupted by the aggressive acts of the inhabitants, so it is more crucial for me to document the work once it is up.

Victoriaville . J’espère que tu aimes cette

ville autant que l’ai aimée. Tant d’années se

sont écoulées comme neiges au printemps.

Cela me touche beaucoup de t’écrire de si loin.

Est-ce que les oies sauvages se donnent encore

rendez-vous chaque automne au lac Bulstrode ?

Je t’écris depuis mon enfance, mon adolescence.

De la courbure de l’âge. Du temps passé et à

venir.

Nous sommes faits de lettres, de mots. Lettres

de voyage. Lettres à mon père, à ma mère .

Lettres d’amour. Tant de signes sur la page,

sur l’écran. Lettres pour la paix. Pour le

futur. Courriel à l’ami . Tant de mots. De

peine, d’espoir, d’ennui, de bonheur. Le

paysage est une lettre ouverte. Nous écrit.

COMME UNE LETTRE RÉUNIE est un projet d'art public qui revisite la notion de monument commémoratif en recueillant la parole des simples citoyens. Le processus de création et la sculpture elle-même sont un véhicule par lequel les mots traverseront le temps. Cette sculpture, soulignant le 150e anniversaire de Victoriaville, laisse une trace durable dans le paysage urbain afin que les générations futures puissent, à travers une œuvre d’art, garder vivant le fil ténu de la mémoire.

Dans un premier temps, les initiateurs du projet ont sollicité des lettres aux victoriavillois du futur via une boîte aux lettres spéciale installée au centre-ville ainsi qu'un site internet. Environ 200 lettres, souvent rédigées à la main, parfois accompagnées d'illustrations et souvent très élaborées ont été recueillies et partagées pendant un temps déterminé dans l'espace public du site internet. Ces lettres représentent un corpus diversifié et pertinent qui aborde pratiquement tous les styles épistolaires et tous les sujets et préoccupations de la population.

Lors du dévoilement de la sculpture, en septembre 2011, une quinzaine d'auteurs ont lu publiquement leur lettre. Les 200 lettres ont été déposées dans une mallette qui fut scellée dans la sculpture par trois jeunes «passeurs» de trois, dix et trente ans. Ces derniers se sont engagés,lors d'une petite cérémonie civique à la mairie, à réouvrir la sculpture dans cinquante ans, soit en 2061. L'oeuvre est installée dans un espace intimiste près de l'hôtel de ville dans un lieu fréquenté par les passants.

Description:

Sculpture fontaine avec des rideaux de pluie et un bassin réfléchissant contenant des projections vidéo. La vidéo montre des personnes de diverses communautés parlant de leur langue maternelle. Les panneaux de verre qui surplombe le toit sont gravés de symboles tirés des langues parlées à Surrey. Les quatre colonnes qui supportent le toit servent de haut-parleur. L'audio est transmis à travers les trous des colonnes. Ces dessins perforés forment du texte en braille.

L'autre classe des petits était ouverte
à tout ce qui n'était pas de langue
française, compris dans la catégorie
anglaise, encore qu'elle ne comptait guère
d'enfant d'origine anglaise, mais plutôt
russe, polonaise, italienne, espagnole,
irlandaise, tchèque, flamande...

Au bout de quelques années, je m'étais
tellement attachée à ma classe qui m'en
apprenait sur le folklore, les chants, les
danses et les peuples...

J'étais si près de ces enfants que le
frère Joseph m'ayant tout de même
proposé la troisième ou la quatrième
année, je le suppliai de me laisser avec
mes petits immigrants.

Au couvent, les religieuses entretenaient
chez nous des sentiments d'héroïque
défense. Bravant la loi, prenant sur
leurs pauvres loisirs des heures
supplémentaires, elles continuaient à
nous instruire en français...

dans mes dernières années d'étude,
tous les prix octroyés par l'Association
des Canadiens français du Manitoba, à
l'élève obtenant la première place aux
examens de français

What can you see from your poplar tree,
looking back through the wind and wheat?
A Fraser River ebbing high, whose
banks yearn for your feet?

Where is it you are looking,
from your branches up above
the fish ponds that your Father built
and the sleeping Holland bulbs?

Are you looking to the sunny East,
where you first began your climb -
the East where you are still a child
with pockets filled with time?

Are you looking to the Southern warmth,
where trees are always in bloom -
the South that fills your lungs with love
as your children keep the child within you?

Are you looking to the dusky West,
where the day seeps toward the sea -
the West where life reminds us
of what all we’ve witnessed means?

Away on in the treetops,

from fade to beauty,
this giant clock.

These evergreen buttresses,
these cloistered ferns,
these windows of stained life,
are built for you.

The crow calls the gardener
to his bed,
but leaves him tired,
aching, fed.

Gardener, have you left space
for the next plant,
the one I can’t yet imagine
that will make this place
complete?

Oh crow! What does
the tree give you in return
for all that good advice?

I the flower, you the eye.
I am rooted, you pass by.
Come the winter, we will part,
But in the Spring,

The bird calls to the branch
and so
then next, to my heart
the bright notes go.

this garden’s genius lies:

Paulik Gardens Neighbourhood Park était autrefois la maison de deux familles. Il contenait les grands jardins, des boisés, une bleuetière, et la tourbière de la famille Paulik. Il y avait aussi le Lulu Island Water Gardens qui appartenait à la famille Ohler. Le projet a pour but de revitaliser le parc dans la communauté.

L'oeuvre comporte trois éléments :

1) Dix capsules incrustées dans le sol le long de la voie à Nanaimo et la 41^e Avenue. Les capsules contiennent des objets qui pourraient se trouver dans les poches des gens.

2) Six portes en métal et cadres de fenêtre placés dans un rectangle évoquant la structure d'une maison. Les cadres ont également des plaques avec des mots

3) Deux girouettes situées dans le sud et nord-ouest coins du Clarendon et 45^e Avenue.

"Before this tract of land became part of the Ridgeway, there was a simple beaten path crossing the space. We see this aspect of our project as a ghost-like trace of an ephemeral, unplanned path - memorializing something that is so much a part of everyday life that it almost escapes notice…" "We have marked out this path with ten clear resin capsules with objects cast into them. The objects are things you would normally carry in your pockets: notes, bus tickets, loose change, etc." Re door and window frames: Our intention is to raise questions around ideas of ownership of and entitlement to the city: whose city? Do we feel the city belongs to us because it is 'public'? Or do we think of entitlement in terms of private property: what we own or don't own?" Regarding the weathervanes: "The turning of the signs in the wind functions as metaphor for shifting notions of community, place, and a sense of entitlement we feel as citizens." "The title "Right to the City" comes from the urban theorist Henri Lefebvre's text by the same name which calls for a different envisioning of the city: for it to be organized for, and belong to, its inhabitants, rather than organized for profit. The elements in this project explore the contradictions and ambiguities of public and private space. Although we can identify in general with Vancouver as 'our city', as belonging to the public, space in the city is clearly delineated: either it belong to you or id doesn't. The space along Nanaimo is technically public space, and unlike the neighbouring yards, anyone can go on this space. However, in the larger scheme of things, do we feel entitled to it as a space? We're interested in drawing attention to the public nature of this space and the claims made on the city. Related to these ideas, this artwork addresses the ephemeral, shifting nature of the site, both in terms of the physical environment and cultural priorities. This area was once a vacant lot and is now a small park. We hope the work will open up a space for contemplation and reconsideration on the meaning of these transitions. This is a chance to look at the neighbourhood in another way, and by extension, the city."

L'artiste Luc Archambault a déposé une proposition qui, tout en étant très contemporaine, rappelle l'aspect historique en donnant une interprétation symbolique des objectifs premiers poursuivis par L'Institut à l'époque. En effet, créé par de jeunes intellectuels de l'époque, L'Institut se voulait une réponse au rapport Durham qui niait que les Canadiens français aient une histoire et une culture.

C'est pour accroître la convivialité du Vieux-Québec, attirer la population et les touristes dans ce coin du quartier que la place de l'Institut a été réalisée. Les travaux se sont faits dans le cadre de l'Entente sur la mise en valeur de la capitale intervenue entre la Ville de Québec et la Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec. Le 22 novembre 2000 eût lieu l'inauguration de la place de l'Institut et de la chaussée des Écossais.

The painted traffic box is part of an HRM-wide project. Poet Matthew Robinson was contacted by Heather MacLeod, who works for the city’s Community Relations & Cultural Affairs department, to work on a site-specific poem for Grand Parade.

« From that point on I started to do a little research on the Grand Parade—-after Heather explained the particular traffic box that she had in mind—-and eventually came up with the poem we ended up using,” says Robinson. He says the poem isn’t exactly commemorative, but “something that was accessible and interesting; something that would be rather easily associated with the city and its people. I hope the poem does that in a reasonable way.»
