A latecomer to the field, Virginie Brunelle was 20 when she took her first dance class. Five years later, she was graduating from UQÀM’s Dance program, and collaborating with well-established choreographers who recognized her as one of the strongest new voices. In 2009, she launched her eponymous dance company, and created her first full-length piece, the award-winning Les cuisses à l’écart du cœur, presented in Montreal and in Italy. A year later came Foutrement, co-produced by Théâtre La Chapelle, which toured to more than 12 European cities, with excerpts presented at the Jeux de la Francophonie in Lebanon. She opened La Chapelle’s 2011 fall season with her third opus Complexe des genres, which won second prize at the Aarhus International Choreography Competition and was selected to open CINARS in 2012. It then toured Europe, Latin America, Korea, and more than 20 venues in Québec. In 2013, Virginie premiered PLOMB, co-produced by L’Agora de la danse, and she is currently working on her next creation set to open the Agora’s new home in downtown Montreal in 2016.
Virginie’s signature is distinct – highly physical and detailed performances, strong cinematographic imagery, and classical vocabulary deconstructed into jagged rhythms and raw gestural motifs.
