Daring each other to move, to crack the fine layer of beach sand that covered us. Trying to watch each other through the corners of sand-crusted eyes, knowing the joy of immersion is only good after you have come out of the earth for air and a hot dog. We giggle at first and then break into gales of laughter as the fine white breaks like a layered cake into dark wet chocolate beachsand. For days afterwards, the sand will follow us--a sharp, finely honed shifting of everything.
