On the beach

Description:

Installed on the beach at English Bay in Vancouver, a closely-knit group of twelve chairs makes up a unit in which a simple dream or interest is shared. Facing West toward the open sea, one is reconciled with the old and the new worlds, the past and the future, memories and hopes. Contemplated from a distance, the sculpture installation may provoke a feeling of melancholy and abandonment. However, if the viewer agrees to play a role and interact with others in this intricate artwork, he or she becomes an actor and a significant part of the work. A poetic text in French or English by Luc LaRochelle is engraved on the seat of each chair.
