Public Artwork
Nous sommes un peuple
Integrated to the front wall of the Institut Canadien
The work consists of a low relief that evokes the original purpose of the Institut Canadien, 2 bronze sculptures and of five brass plates that evoke its history. The text is engraved on the wall.
Nous. Nous sommes. Nous sommes un. Nous sommes un peuple. Nous sommes le peuple du Québec
Artist Luc Archambault made a proposal that, while being very contemporary, recalls historical aspects of the institution by offering a symbolic interpretation of its primary goals in its early days. Founded by young intellectuals, the Institut was a response to the Durham Report, which denied the fact that French Canadians had history and culture.
The Place de l'Institut was created in order to increase the friendliness of Old Québec as well as attract the population and tourists to this area of the neighbourhood. The artwork was produced under the terms of the Entente sur la mise en valeur de la capitale, an agreement between Québec City and the Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec. The Place de l'Institut and La Chaussée des Écossais were inaugurated on November 22, 2000.
