Public Artwork
Jeu d’ailes et d’échelles
Inspired by the former function of the building, a fire station, the artist created a system of ladders that unfold into a spiral, evoking the fenestration. Wings are added to these, flight devices associated with the act of ascending, like ladders. As the library is a place of discovery and knowledge, it is a window onto itself and the world, a concept that is also present in the artwork with its constant back and forth movement between the local and the universal. Thus, twenty-four glass panes present fragments of a text by a Dolbeau resident, while displaying the symbols of the Greek alphabet. In addition, binoculars are installed on a sculptural element evoking a globe's swivel pin. They can be used to look more closely at details of the work, but especially to take note of its final element, its treasure, a world atlas filled with knowledge.

Plate:
Cette envolée semée d'indices comme autant de
fenêtres ouvrant sur soi et sur le monde n'est
véritable que par le regard de Chacun qui en
devient le liant essentiel, capable de maintenir
le rapport entre l'unicité et le tout.
